GM ABS light

I own a 2004 GMC Canyon that has about 87,000 miles on it. Over the last couple of weeks the ABS light will come on, and an ABS/traction light will display above the odometer. I did some research online, and from that it looks like that it is common for the front ABS sensors to go bad on these trucks. A friend of my father has a GM tech II system that can pull on ABS code to see if that might actually issue. Except he is living in the U.P. for a few more weeks at least. Today on my way home from running some errands the ABS light came on (which it has done several times in the last couple of weeks) but this time the brake warning light also came on. I carefully drove the truck home, but the brakes felt fine. So now I don't know what to do. Does anyone have a scan tool near me that can pull the ABS code, so I can solve the problem. I am kind of worried to drive the truck now. Thanks.

A lot of times a worn hub assembly can cause the abs sensor to get false readings against the reluctor ring. Are you hearing any type of roaring at 30-40 mph? If so does the noise seem to get quieter around corners? My scanner can pull ABS codes and I can plug it in and check...I work in Troy and live in S.C.S. Takes two minutes to check, let me know.

I live in Shelby Twp. I have not heard the bearing noise you mentioned. I do know one of the front bearings has been replaced by the previous owner. Last night I did check the master cylinder fluid level and checked for leaks. The fluid level was fine, and did not see any leaks.

Once the sensor starts coming on and off like that... The bearing is going bad... It will need to be replaced...

Mine did that too, and as mentioned above it was the hub/sensor assembly. Surprisingly it wasn't that much more expensive to replace the entire shooting-match than it was to just get the sensor. My understanding though is that just replacing the sensor is a temp-fix at best in these cases, so prepare to replace the whole thing to fix it properly.

The truck is a 2wd with the Z71 offroad package. So in others words 4wd minus the front drive line. Would the ABS issue also cause the brake warning light to come on as well?

Last night I took the truck to a friend of my father's that has a GM tech 2 scan tool. There was few trouble codes for both the front left and front right abs sensor. Not exactly knowing how old the trouble codes are, and thinking one of the wheel bearings has been replaced. We cleared all of the trouble codes to get a clean baseline. I drove the truck to work today. On my way home the abs light came on again. I stopped by the guy with the scan tool again and pulled the trouble codes. This time it showed the right front abs fault. Which was my suspicion. So I guess I have something to work on tomorrow.

Ok. I got a number front wheel bearing. But now I have a new problem. How the Hell do I get the bearing out of the spindle? I have it unbolted from the spindle from the back. I rather not take a BFH to the back side of the brake rotor. The brakes are in pretty good condition. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Ok, in case anyone is still reading this. I got the wheel bearing out, without damaging the brake rotor. So now everything is back together. Hopefully no ABS light tomorrow.
