gas gauge problem?

i have a 87 cutlass supreme with a 307 v8.
my dashboard is original and my gas gauge wont read correctly, it is always saying its either full or on empty. i was wondering if anybody knew how i would go about to fix this problem or somebody has had this problem. any help would be great. thank you

Usually the ground at the tank is bad. Or the resistor that tells it where it's at is bad, but i'd check the ground first.

If all else fails try adding 1/2 a quart of trans fluid to the gas tank next time you fill it.
A lot of times the contacts in the fuel sender become gummed up with varnish and the trans fluid will clean it off and make the gauge work again.

If it doesn't work the first try try it again. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries before it works.
