The ball bearings are shot in the inducer fan assembly in my furnace (2001 heil/tempest/acroaire 80% efficient unit), I can get a new assembly for $122 and it's easy to replace, any notes of caution doing so? I noticed the housing gets VERY hot... is that normal?

nothing that wont take just a little while, not hard to do.

edit:
i just read its the "inducer" fan... it should get hot since its drawing the flames through the heat exchanger.

if its not working now you have more chance of carbon monoxide issues...

yes but make sure that doesnt happen....

it fits kinda "loosely" with a lot of play, only 4 screws secure it, i removed it and lubed the bearings so it works properly for now, but the gasket fell apart when doing so, going to pick up a new unit at lunch

the furnace should not run if the IDM isnt working, if it does, there is a problem with a pressure switch that you need to locate, it should be up near the IDM. the IDM should have been packaged with a new gasket OR a tube of silicone. its very easy to do.

the IDM needs to close the pressure switch before the circuit board will let the ignitor start heating. the board could be bad too, if its letting the furnace run.

no, the IDM never failed completely, i just noticed it was extremely loud when i got home from work last night, removed it lubed the bearings and reinstalled, it's much quieter now but i'm replacing anyway
