So the current problem: Sometimes the car is fine, for extended periods of driving. Other times, it just dies, and you can hear the fuel pump going on and off a few times. Before this, I found the ignition coil was wired to be on 24/7, and the way it was grounded was shorting out the computer. That has been fixed, but the same result is occuring at random times. I drove from 10/Groesbeck to 8 and Telegraph, and then from 8 and Telegraph to Downtown Rochester with no problems. When I went to leave work later in the evening, it was dying just after starting it. After about 6 times trying to keep it running, I said screw this and called U WIN. After they towed it to my repair facility of choice, I started the car and it fired right up, no problem. Let it run for 20 minutes, no issue. Basically I'm at the point where the problem is too intermittent for me to know whats wrong, and my mechanic is too busy to spend all day every day trying to replicate the problem. He had a few ideas of parts I should replace, but I'm curious if anyone on here has had a similar issue, and if so, what fixed it for them.

PS - Everything from Power wire off of the battery, terminals, Ignition Coil, Cap/Rotor, Plugs, Wires, etc have been changed so far. I'm thinking maybe bad relay, or computer on its way out? I'd really like to get this thing 100% right, as I would like to sell it, but I won't sell it unless to the best of my knowledge that its in 100% working condition.

Thanks a bunch Motown, I'm sure someone has an answer.

Try changing out the TFI module on the distributor. Along with timing it tells the ECM when the engine is turning over and when the fuel pump should be running. Thats why when you first turn on the car the pump kicks on for 3 seconds and then shuts off if the engine isn't cranking. If it doesn't see that the engine is rotating then there is no need for the pump to keep running. You could be getting a bad signal from the TFI and the pump is shutting off.

Just got off the phone with the mechanic, he said the relay under the seat looked really nasty(I had him order a new one of those last week, finally came in) so he's changing that, and I told him to put a new TFI thingie in there too. Anything else you think should be replaced, so I don't have to worry about it? Also, +rep for the two above this. Thanks guys

I don't really know of a relay under the seat that controls anything having to do with the engine. It's most likely for the power seats. Have him just replace the TFI first and go from there. No need in changing a bunch of parts if you don't need them. TFI is most likely your problem.

Wherever the fuel pump relay is. Thought that was the one under the drivers seat. He's replacing that and the TFI thing.

relay, module on the distributor have been changed, and timing has been adjusted(it was at -2*) Hopefully this does the trick

Wow..that could be a problem. Did he remember to remove the spout connector before timing the engine? How long have you been driving the car like this? Have you ever messed with the timing?

ive never messed with it, ive had the car for a few months now, but i dont drive much. maybe 2500-3k miles. I'd imagine he did the timing right, whatever that entails.

Ask him if he pulled the spout connector (little gray module plugged into a couple wires coming off the harness to the TFI) If you have been driving with timing @ -2 it would run like shit. Advance that bitch to 12-14 degrees(as long as you run premium) or 10' if you want to run 87 octane. It should be night and day difference with the timing correctly set from -2

Called to ask about the spout connector. He seemed offended that I asked, but yea, he pulled it first. HOPING this is the last of the troubles I'll have with this thing. Really want something more comfortable, but I cant sell a broken car. Thanks for the posts so far, everyone has been given rep as able.
