Ford PAT keys

Do I need two keys to program a new key for a '97 Mustang, or can I do it with only one? I have read that I can, and that I can not do it with one key. Anyone have real experience with this?

I only had 1 key for my 97 cobra, paid the dealership 30-40 bucks to program another. I just bought the key off ebay and took it in.

Maybe theres someone on here that can do it cheaper?

You cannot add a new key to the car if you only have one right now, without the use of a dealership. If you had 2 good keys, you just cycle the 1st key on until the PATS light proves out, remove it and cycle the 2nd key, remove it and cycle the new key to program it to the system.

You will need to have the PCM security access entered to program a 2nd key at this point. I can help, PM me if you can make it to Ypsilanti one afternoon M-F.

You are right, I stand corrected. I should have stated "without the use of some specialized equipment"

when someone tried to steal my expedition a few years back and i had to replace ignition cyl i had to get the truck programed to accept the new keys , i put an ad on craigslist to see if someone could do it and some guy came with a laptop and some weird ass program and took care of everything for like 50 bucks and my truck was running in like 10mins

I was under the impression you can get a blank PATS key from ebay or someplace similar. Get it cut like a regular key at the hardware store. Then use the the cars programming instructions to program new PATS key to the car. May want to look into that. I did this on my crown victoria.

But I could be wrong...flame suit ACTIVATED.

you have to have 2 valid keys to add a key without specialized hardware/software

Found a local key shop that charged $55 for key & programming it, it took all of five minutes or less. Thanks all for the info.

Hmmm... I wonder if they had aftermarket software. Factory software/ hardware takes a good 15min because there is a 10min security lock out that takes place before you can access the security portion of the vehicles computer.
