Ford E7 head EGR bumps.

Has anyone ever shaved these bumps with the heads still on the motor, and.... also the egr tube that goes from one head to another, then to the smog pump, has anyone capped these off, if so what method did you use?

Thanks,
Justin

i'm running fully ported e7 heads, did it myself. motor was disassembled. used a makita 1/4" grinder. trying to do this with the heads on the motor wouldn't be smart. porting makes a huge amount of very small shavings, and if any get down in the cylinders you're pretty much guaranteed to destroy the cylinder walls. for the little trouble it is to remove the heads from a 302 i'd just do that, disassemble them, and do it right. the process takes a great deal of time and patience, especially if you smooth the port walls, gasket match, and pocket port.

i used a pair of regular hex head bolts, they are 9/16" coarse thread, to plug the AIR passages at the back of each head, used regular steel washers and sealed them with copper RTV, and i have zero problems. it's a big bolt so you can torque the crap out of it (within reason). used steel washers because i couldnt' find copper ones that big.

True about taking the heads off, wont I need new head bolts then? I could possibly stuff small rags up in where the valve is... and pull it out with needle nose pliers after the shaving is complete, bringing the fine shavings down with it if the rag was damp maybe?

Or let me know if its even worth it? Im just putting a small cam in this motor.

Stang Nut, do you have pics? I am not sure if I am understanding what you did with yours. I didnt know those passages were threaded?

in the front of each head, the outermost bolt hole where the accesory brackets are bolted on is also the end of the egr passage: they use a plug that's threaded on both the outside and the inside for this. both ends of the passage are threaded to accomodate this so that the heads can be used on either side of the motor.

unfortunately i dont' have pics of my port job. depending on what you're doing with this motor (nitrous, forced induction, etc) it might not be worth porting at all. those heads will make fine power on their own with a power adder. if one of those isn't in the books and neither is a set of heads, i'd say go for it.

as for the idea of using rags in the ports, i suppose you'd be ok if you back all the rockers off so the valves will be shut, then blow the ports out with compressed air.

a set of head gaskets and head bolts dont' run that much, fyi.

ok, I think I will probably scratch that idea then, cause it looks like some NAWZZZ is in the works.. lol

I see what your talking about now with the egr, thanks!
