Ford AOD questions

I just picked up a 1989 mustang with an AOD trans. This is the first AOD mustang I have owned. The trans was built with a Transgo shift kit and feels like it shifts firm as it should. Here are the issues: first if you leave it in overdrive or drive it shifts to 2nd at maybe 5 mph and 3rd by 10 mph. Is there a way to change this? Next issue is the guy I got it from says you can now hold the gears as long as you want and shift manually. how is this possible when I put it in first it seems to hold until I shift, but when I shift up which is D on the shifter it goes to 2nd then automatically shifts to 3rd around 4800 rpm. Being that there are only 3 forward gear selections (overdrive, Drive and 1st) is this my only option for shifting?

i though to hold second you upshifted then moved the shifter back to first again or something. someone was telling me about this the other day.
haha don't try it until a ford guru like SASA or someone answers

Ive heard of the 1st to drive then back to first to hold 2nd then back to drive to get 3rd. I wasnt sure this works or will kill the trans. Also how can you make it shift at redline when just leaving it in drive (adjustment)?

It's called the AOD 1-2 shuffle. That is how I race my AOD with the transgo shift kit.

Keep it in 1st, shift to 2nd at desired rpm, as soon as it up shifts put it back in 1st. With the transgo you should not feel a jerk in the trans when doing this, if it was installed correctly. Once back in 1st you can hold 2nd to your desired rpm then shift in to drive for 3rd.

PM me with any further questions.

Thats how I use to shift my X womens 88GT it would grab second sometimes without a kit in it

I have a 88 GT with a AOD and a shift kit (not sure of the brand)
I tried the 1-2 shuffle but i find it hard with the sloppy stock shifter, mine always wants to slip up to OD which probably isn't good for the trans.
I'm going to look into getting a better shifter.
