Ive got a no reverse issue, Ive been into a few auto transmissions before with success so I'm not a total novice. Usually when the band fails the clutches are soon thereafter. Any tips on books on rebuilds or people that have parts for these or should i just order a full rebuild kit? I was debating getting a used trans but i really dont know what im getting, i'd rather know whats inside and gain the experience.

You will need a special set of tools to reassemble a few of the double lipped pistons inside this transmission. Its a bit of a bitch to rebuild. I would say leave this one to the pro-s.

mystryguy,
do you want to try to rebuild it or just repair it. several changes to the 4l80e trans depending on the year,
the problem with the units is a spike in line pressure in rev that causes the failure.
early models break the direct clutch piston or break the rev band-
very early units 95& earlier walk the pins out of the case that seat the rev band(scraps the case) , and on some of the later units-02-03 some and i stress some can be fixed without pulling the trans.
like sean said, if your rebuilding it, it requires several special tools to assemble it. most shift kits like superior or trans go help with the spiking rev pressure....depends on year.
