F150 5.0 and 3.5 4x4 actual city, combined, hwy mpg?

Well I am needing to replace my 2013 explorer because I drive a lot of miles for work, and I don't keep vehicles beyond the power train warranty at 60k. Can you guys that drive f150s share your fuel mileage that you get? I am mostly a highway mileage person, so I am most interested in that.

I was planning to wait for the 2015 f150s, but it doesn't look like they will be available before the snow falls (and I need new tires). I was also looking at the Colorado but they have a sales hold on them for an airbag issue.

Looks like they have some killer deals on 2014 f150s so id be stupid not to consider it.

Thanks guys

You're going to get pretty much the same mileage with either. On my Ecoboost crew cab 4x4 I average about 17mpg with 50/50 highway and around-town. Straight highway at 75mph I get 19-20 depending on whether there's a headwind or not. 21 is possible if going 65 with a tail wind. Trunk just posted a leftover 2013 Ecoboost Super cab for sale that he'll probably give a hell of a deal on.

Agree with this. I've got a 2012 Supercrew 4x4 with 3.92 gears, running 16-17's mixed city and typically 18-19 on the e-way, I've rarely seen the meter above 20mpg's, I try to drive it like "grandpa". If I found a good deal on a 5.0, I'd probably jump on it. Unless your really gonna max it out towing something and need all that torque.

That's so close to what I need. The problem with my company is that they contract a company to manage a fixed and variable payment for part of the vehicle and per mile fuel. The max we can keep a vehicle is model year plus 3 years, so I can only keep a 2013 until the end of 2016. The fuel rate is based off 20 mpg and zip code (ford edge is the base template).

How much does that mileage drop off in the cold? I average 22 combined in my awd explorer 3.5 and 20 in the winter.

I don't think I've noticed a mileage drop off in the winter, but have never calculated, just going off the "meter" It's better than my 03 Hemi Ram so I'm happy.

You could probably "get there" mileage-wise with the proper geared truck (3.55 or so), and a supercab, not supercrew.

I have a 13 CC 4x2 5.0L and average 19.8 MPG with a 50/50 mix in driving. On long trips it can average 22 MPG on summer gas but with winter coming I'll lose 1-1.5 MPG using winter blend gas. Some of the mileage killers IMO are the 20-22" wheels and the ecoboost motors. Most of the Ecoboost trucks I've driven can't get better than 16 MPG and the bigger wheels just makes it worse.

Most clients report 15-17 in 4x4 Ecoboost's they usually pick up 1-2 with a tune/premium.
like "soap" said you will then loose that 1-2 when they switch to winter blend fuel.
The coyote trucks are reporting similar economy #'s to the O.E. Ecoboots's

That's what I've heard. My sales guy recommended going with the 5.0 because he can get 20-21 on the hwy more easily/consistent. I drive with cruise control a lot, so I would bet I can hit the max.

Do those tuners, like diablo sport, void your warranty??

I wish I could do the ram. But the fuel reimbursement is only based on unleaded gasoline. I've ran some math on the mpg increase coupled with the higher fuel cost and it doesn't work out.

If you're going to DD the truck and hardly ever use it as a truck (towing/payload) the 5.0 is perfect. If you are going to tow, the Eco-boost will walk away from the 5.0 all day long. I've had 2 Eco's and I love the power, I've also had 20-24's on on the trucks so the MPG dropped. If you're looking for MPG don't buy a truck

The short answer is YES.

If you never have a problem with the truck, they will never know. If your truck has an issue that is consistent with being tuned, Ford will ask the dealer to send the data from the computer. Ford can and in most cases will deny the claim and void the warranty. This leaves you paying out of your pocket. I have seen this happen, it sucks, but Ford isn't going to pay for a tune/tuners screw up. This will show up on a Car Fax and hurt the resale value also.

They do run really well with a tune though ;)

I knew someone would hit me on the "don't buy a truck for mpg", but being I can't afford to pay for two vehicles/insurance, nor do I have room for two, I have to have a relatively good mpg "channel lock pliers" vehicle. I travel for work, and I am only paid so much for fuel, so if it isn't at the base mpg that the payment rate is built from (20mpg) or close to it, I essentially am paying to do my job.

A truck is by far the best vehicle that suits all my needs, but I just need to try to make it work financially. Plus my wife wants me to buy a truck so how can I pass that up!!!!!

2011 ecoboost long bed crewcab 4x4
22's with heavy tires.

14.9 stock
17.3 Livernois 87oct tune

The loaner ecoboost I'm currently driving shows 13.8 on the trip calculator. It has a plug in tuner

I have 2011 EB Supercrew 4x4 with 1" taller than stock BFG All-Terrain T/As and 3.55 gears. I have recorded every tank of fuel and hand-calculated the economy since day one and I'm now at 45K miles. I get 14.5-15.5 mpg in 100% city driving, and 17-21 mpg in 100% highway driving (depending on speed and weather). I've seen just over 22 mpg going 60 mph in perfect conditions through the U.P., but that was certainly a one-time deal. In winter I've found a 1-1.5 mpg drop like everyone has stated. In most versions of combination driving I get about 17 mpg.

2012 eco screw 4x4, egg shell under the pedel 18.5 around town and to work. Highway at 55, 20. If I drive it normal I get 16.5 around town.

I got WAY better mileage when I lived in NC. I was 18-19city and 20-24 highway (consistently) I did average 26.8 on a 60 mile round trip at one point but I have never seen that again.

Now that Im back in MI and drive a little faster and hit more traffic i see 16-17c/18h

My lifetime 11k miles fuel economy has been 18.5 mpg

2013 xlt 4x4 ecoboost ext cab 6.5 ft bed with 3.31 rear axle im pretty sure. I have a leveling kit, AFE CAC tube and catback. I normally drive average and im pretty easy on the pedal off the light. if the turbos are spooling your mileage will take a HUGE hit. that happens around 75 mph or more for me.... or if you are towing. The truck can pull anything and its pretty fast for a v6. I love it tho.

Wow, after reading all of the posts (thank you!), and tons of posts on the internet, there is no definitive answer on which engine is a better choice for mpg.

Since the vast majority of my miles are highway, 75mph or less, cruise control, I need to get a 3.55 gear or less. I tow very little at this point, but do need the capability to pull a car hauler or utility trailer. I can say at this point I have no idea which of the two engines will be best for me. I have a colleague who has a EB, and he cannot get the advertised 21mpg and says a supplier that we have has an identical truck to his with the 5.0 and can get 21mpg on the hwy. My gut says that the 5.0 is the better choice for my needs.
