Exhaust Leak Repair (putty?)

I have a flange leak under my car and it's annoying the hell out of me. I replaced the gaskets and tried to hammer/grind the Flanders flat but they're just too old and rusty to seal up properly. Has anyone had any luck with muffler putty or anything of the sort? I really like to avoid having the flanges replaced. The leak isn't bad, but it's enough to hear.
 
soak a gasket in flange sealant for a few minutes then quickly assembly it back together onto cleaned (remove debris) mating surfaces. It might hold up.
 
^This, on a marquis the flanges distort all the time, I usually just cut them out and weld a pipe in place. But copper RTV will work, fill the area with it, let it dry for at least a few hours before starting it.
 
I'll have to give that a shot this weekend when I don't have to drive it. Thanks for the tip.
 
Both option should be as effective, which one is easiest and cheapest to you may be the deciding factor.

I personally prefer the soaked gasket. Lessens the chances of it blowing out, keeps the mating areas/surface layers evenly distributed when it clamps down during torqueing, and the sealant is anaerobic.
