I have a street car that I occasionally run at the strip. I've relocated the battery to the rear. What else do I need?

Any car with a relocated battery must be equipped with a master electrical cutoff, capable of stopping all electrical functions including ignition (must shut the engine off, as well as fuel pumps, etc.). The switch must be located on the rear of the vehicle, with the "off" position clearly marked. If the switch is of a "push / pull" type, then "push" must be the motion that shuts off the switch, and plastic or "keyed" typed switches are prohibited. Also, the battery must be completely sealed from the driver and/or driver compartment. This means a metal bulkhead must separate the trunk from the driver compartment, or the battery must be located in a sealed, metal box constructed of minimum .024 inch steel or .032 inch aluminum, or in an NHRA accepted plastic box. In cars with a conventional trunk, metal can simply be installed behind the rear seat and under the package tray to effectively seal the battery off from the driver. In a hatchback type vehicle the battery box is usually the easiest solution, since the alternative is to fabricate a bulkhead which seals to the hatch when closed. At present, Moroso is the only company which offers an NHRA accepted plastic battery box, part number 74050."

This rulebook is from 2003. Specificly the part about the single moroso part number being the only one accepted? Isnt milan an ihra track? Are the rules different there?

I want to relocate the battery to clean up the engine bay as well as knock out as much weight off the nose as possible to offset the heft of the street car accessories (A/c, ps etc). I would rather not spend 100 bucks just for the box alone to do it and then spend on wiring and a cutout switch.

Thanks in advance

I run an alum. box (non-vented) with a sealed battery (then there is no need for the vent or bulkhead. The switch is required and I've had an NHRA track check it once. Hope this helps.

I know about the switch. I was just wondering if that box was the only option. It would look out of place in the back of an all black car.

They give wall thickness specifications for an aluminum box, so you could either make one, or the Summit one I believe is acceptable. Have it anodized or powdercoated if you want it pretty. :)

I have the moroso blue plastic box and it looks like shit. I have seen other companies sell different colored plastic boxes but I don't know if they are NHRA legal.

I have the Taylor aluminum box that is vented and they have never said anything to me. It looks good and is functional

Exactly. It looks identical but for $110 for a plastic box do you risk it?

I was thinking about the moroso box and some interior spray paint/dye if the summit one isnt an option? I have dyed some plastic interior before and if its prepped right it looks great and lasts awhile.

I think there are also specs for how the box mounts to the floor as well...I know there is for ballast boxes.

box mounting isnot specified, but since it says 2 3/8 boltsa re needed to mount the battery, I guess as long as everything is held down with 3/8 bolts, you should be good

I have mnounted the moroso boxes by using the 3/8 studs it comes with, through the floor, a nut on either side on the floor, studs high enough to bolt the batt down

We ran one in the 69 camaro ss my brother has, so i know how its done. I guess I will just have to look into it.
