Dodge Ram shifter question

Occasionally when I go to shift my truck from drive to park the shifter will go all the way, but the transmission will not actually go into park. It will either stop in neutral or the reverse position. I then have to pull the shifter all the way down to 1st then all the way back to park. Any ideas what it is? I took it in to get looked at but the mechanic said he checked and everything was the way it is supposed to be. The truck is a 2003 Ram 1500 4x4. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

if the steering column is ok, then something is either wrong with the park rod, detent ball & spring on the valvebody or the most likely scenario is the snap ring in the overdrive section has broken and a piece of it is interfering with the park rod. very common problem.

03?? 46re trans or the 45re??
hemi used a 45re. different problem

Yes, it is a Hemi

i have an '07 bighorn hemi ram. it does that on occassion, if i go into reverse it does nothing even though the indicator is lite up on reverse. i just put it back in park and try again, it usually makes this nice clunking sound. fortionatly my truck is just a lease so i don't give a shit lol

Well unfortunatley mine isn't a lease, but on the bright side it IS PAID FOR!! I don't have any clunking noise however, but I still want to get it fixed though.

OK....different problem....guessing steering column related. only way I can think of checking it is to disconnect the cable at the trans, and shift it a bunch from d to p and see if it sticks, then go down below and move the lever on the trans from d to p.
its one or the other. good luck
