dmc children's hospital rant

Just a rant guys sorry.

So this is day 2 of being in children's hospital in Detroit. My son ( 5 weeks old ) started off having an absess on his but cheek. So they drained it here at children's on Tuesday. All seemed decent till Thursday and he spiked a mild fever. Some infant Tylenol dropped it down. Well Friday early am like 330 am I'm up for work and my girlfriends feeding the baby and he has a 101.6 fever. Long story short I called off work and we go to the hospital. He has an infection that they say at 1st was his absess re forming so they cut it open and re drained it , very very little drainage. So they test his pee and blood for infection but that takes days to grow cultures so we don't have an answer on that yet. So this leads to the next test , a spinal fluid test ware they stick a needle in his back to get spinal fluid to test it for infection. 1st time they did it I'm like sure go ahead and they can't get the fluid , 2nd time same day they want to try it again ( different nurse) so I'm hesitant but say fuck it and they do it again , once again they didn't get it. So this morning I get here and my girlfriends got a mob of doctors in the room saying there going to do it again but this time there using sedation and a ultrasound machine. So when I refuse it about 1000 times to this thick headed doctor he says well fine we will hold him for 14 days and treat him with antibiotics for the 14days. Wtf you can't give an infant antibiotics for 14days , it will eventually wipe out all good and bad bacteria . He's already been on antibiotics and iv for going on day 2 now. He hasn't spiked any fever since being here. But he won't eat much and is slightly fussy and sleeps alot. Fuck I would be to if I was 5 weeks old and kept getting poked and stabbed with shit every hour. Then to top it off he started getting hungry last night and they wouldn't let him eat because there were going to " rush " and get this spinal test done. He was going on 12 hours of no food at this time. So once again I'm like fuck it hurry up. Over an hour past and they didn't even come in the room to put the numbing cream on his back so I finally freak out enuff ware they tell me he can eat ( would have been nice to feed him an hour ago when he got hungry ) you can't expect and tell a 5 week old to go without food or have them not eat when there hungry.

I think that covers it. I may add more as the bullshit comes

And I will never come back to this place again. I'll go out of state before that happens.

*** Universal Hospital / Medical Tip ***

When receiving any kind of treatment / procedure
you have to be your own advocate. If we’re talking
about a baby or senior, then we must be the one to
speak up, watch over & guard their care.

Right or wrong, that is simply the reality.

Exactly how I feel.

Now that I chewed the main doctor out and he's no longer allowed in my son's room they changed there mind on the spinal test and there just going to keep him on antibiotics for another day or 2 . Amazing how telling someone off on something "that needs to be done" isn't so important anymore all of a sudden

As stated earlier you are your best advocate. My wife has spent alot of time in the hospital and I have watched her tell more than one doctor that she would like to speak to someone else. When your gut feeling is to tell them no, then go with it.

I understand your upset because your child is so young and the circumstances, however my wife is a nurse at children's hospital and I can assure you she doesn't come home every night bragging about how many babies she had the ability to torture.

They have a job and that job is to get YOU AND YOUR FAMILY an answer to whatever unknown sickness your child may have. There isn't some magic ball that gives answers, I'm sorry for your sons circumstances but honestly until you know what nurses deal with on a daily basis your rant pisses me off.

My wife comes home after a 14 hour shift..... Keep in mind she was only scheduled 8hrs. I hear stories about unrealistic family members and patients that expect every nurses undivided attention, news flash people..... Those hospitals have anywhere from 300-600 patients at any moment and each nurse could have anywhere from 8-12 patients.

If they want such an extensive test on your son, there must be a very good reason, if you choose to deny proper care I wish you the best of luck

I don't need anyone's undivided attention. I 100% understand that these guys have dozens of other patients to see. My bitch isn't with the nurses it's with these doctors. My son has had 2 attempted spinal tests done ware they stick a needle in his back to get spinal fluid out. Both failed and now they want to do it by full sedation and ultrasound, why couldn't they have done that the 1st time knowing he's only weeks old and it's going to be a little harder to test him ?

Like I said thow my bitch isn't with the nurses it's the doctors ( atleast the one I was dealing with) , not quite sure if intimidation is his goal to get stuff done or hes just showing off in front of the students but having about 10 students in a room while your going to tell me what you ARE OR WILL DO to do with my son is not a way to get on my good side and even after I told him no about a dozen times he still didn't get the clue and wanted to fight with me over it. ,.,these nurses are actually quite amazing and do a hell of a job. There the only ones who actually seem to be helping.

Goodluck man, don't take offense from opinions.

I've told a few doctors myself..."You failed, get the ×××× out. "

I had a similar situation with my daughter there. They wanted to do the spinal tap etc. i said fuck that and went to u of m. Far superior hospital for child issues. They did a blood draw and within 30 minutes diagnosed her with swine flue. Two days later we were out the door all was good.

When i got to u of m i gave them the blood work from the dmc. The head nurse told me the dmc lab is shit and they dont trust their lab work so they threw it away.

Going on day 3 . Pretty shitty when you tell the doctor you want to see another one and he still continues to come in and out of the room.

Luckily oakwood dearborn was the 1st hospital we were at and there the ones who took blood work before we got sent to DMC.

Only thing were getting thow is " oh he seems to be doing alot better today " . Still no real solid answers to what's wrong other than some sort of infection that I'm sure DMC caused on Tuesday last time we were hear.

Lots of doctors on Motown...I had no idea.

THIS

I understand you're frustrated and you just want answers and for your baby to get better. Remember, these doctors go to school for a long time and go into hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt to help people. Doctors know a lot more than patients do and they aren't out to screw with people (unless its that scumbag oncologist who intentionally killed people) or to "show off to students". They don't go home at night feeling good that they got to poke a baby an extra two or three times, that's not why they go to work every day.
Try to remain calm and express your concerns in a level headed way. If you don't understand something, ask questions and make them explain.

There are a lot of people out there that think they know more than the doctor and 99% of the time, they don't!
I hear all kinds of stories from my fiance and his friends about the things that patients or their family do or say and how incredibly wrong they can be, just because they don't understand or they're upset.

I hope your son gets better soon!
