We ran another race with our Lemons BMW 325i over the weekend. This would be the same car that I've previously posted pictures of on fire. It had actually been on fire twice. Equipped with a new fuel cell and fuel lines we took it to Gingerman over the weekend for the 24 Hours of Lemons race. We were real fast. Based on lap time we had the second fastest car. We had a few issues, mostly driver errors costing us time in the penalty box from black flags. One broken exhaust hanger got us a black flag and cost us a few laps too. At the end of Saturday we discovered that we were missing a bushing in the rear sub frame. Really not something that is repairable over night and we were certain we had already ran all day Saturday without it so we soldiered through Sunday without it too. Some hellacious noises came fromt he back of the car running it like that, The minor issues didn't keep us from making it to the finish though. We still managed a third place finish out of 65 cars. Only the second race we've run with the car so we were happy just to finish and even happier to place so well. The winner was a Neon that almost won at Gingerman in April and did win at Autobahn in Joliet this year. They had no issues at all, no black flags, no mechanical problems. They beat us by 6 laps, much much fewer laps than we lost on black flags. The second place finisher also finished second to the Neon at Autobahn and was the one car that turned a faster lap than us. They obviously had a few issues of their own. We were 5 laps or so ahead of 4th.
There was some totally crazy shit. This guy known as Speedycop who always pulls crazy shit for Lemons found a rusty 65 Impala Wagon in South Haven on Friday. The owner wanted $1500 for it so it was too much for Lemons. Apparently the owner really only wanted it for the frame though and rented it to speedycop for the weekend under the condition that he could do anything he wanted as long as the fram was undamaged. The owner delivered the car to the track, speedycop welded a cage into it on Friday/Saturday and managed to get it on the track mid day Saturday. It was a slow brake locking machine. But it was pretty awesome.
There was a Porsche 924 with the entire drivetrain out of a Turbo Coupe.
The Index of Affluency winner was a diesel Chevette. That is actually somehow slower than you could ever imagine. Wow. They did a great job of staying out of the way though.
Some guys from the GM design center had a MX6 with a blimp on the roof. It broke a cam. It has a V6. They pulled the plugs from one cylinder bank, fabbed a block off for the intake ports on that bank, and put it back on track. With 3 cylinders it was still faster than the diesel Chevette. However it only ran like that for 3 laps.
SHO V6 in the back of a Geo Metro. It pulled a sweet drift out of turn 10 right in front of me. I don't know what else to try to say about that.
I've got a bunch of pics, I'll try to get them uploaded this week.
