It would be for the basement watching sports and movies.

Any decent ones cheap
Do you need a separate stereo or is sound built into projector

Look for a BenQ, they make some of the best ones under $1000. At that price point, you'll be limited to 1080p, 4k projectors are still pretty costly. A friend of mine has this one and is very happy with it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...1&cm_re=benq_projector-_-24-014-535-_-Product

I have a BenQ, and looked into upgrading to 4k. Still up there in $$$$

I did see some cheap eBay chinese models, you have any experiences with these?

There's no 4K network programming if any. Not worth the extra cost. Unless you plan to strictly watch 4K Blu Ray.

I'd base the 1080 vs. 4k decision on how big of a picture you're planning to project, how close the seated audience will be, etc. If you're only planning to project onto a 50-60" screen and the first row of seats are 8-10' back, I think 1080 would be plenty. But if you're going to do a 100"+ screen, would probably look at the 4k's, personally.

Is it really 4K when the movie is made in 2k?

2k is 2048 x 1080 which is a very little difference from 1080p (1920 x 1080). For all intents and purposes, 2k is simply 1080p with 128 more horizontal pixels. 4k is 3840 x 2160, or 2160p.

Yeah but the cameras used to make these movies from the production side is not 4k. Isnt it like taking a Polaroid picture, scanning it, and looking at it on a 1080p screen? Just asking since nothing is broadcast or made in 4k yet....at least not in mass...

A Polaroid camera isn't digital, so upscaling wouldn't work in the traditional sense. With digital recordings, they are upscaled by the TV so they properly fit the screen.

I have a BenQ w1070 with a 135" screen. Up until very recently everything has been awesome. I'm having an issue with (I think?) the projector dropping the video signal, but the audio continues to work. I assume it's the projector because it happened on both inputs (1 = cable, 2 = PC/video games). When the cable dropped out I'd have to unplug either end of the HDMI cable and plug it back in, and the picture would reappear. For my PC, the screen will go black for about 5 seconds while I see the "Searching for signal" message, and then it reappears. This happens maybe once a week, although I primarily only play video games on it so compared to a TV we watch, I use it much less.

Regardless, I'd buy another BenQ. The picture is awesome, even at 135". I do have a sound bar for TV, but I otherwise use headphones for video games.

I've had an Epson 1080P projector for about 4 years and have been very happy with it. I project on a 100" screen and the picture quality is great for TV, movies, and video games. For sound, I have an Onkyo 8.1 surround sound setup, but think for a budget oriented setup, a sound bar would be fine.

I use it a lot and have had zero issues.
