Cutting springs

Like the title says is it safe to cut springs to lower a car? I was thinking about cutting some mach 1 springs and then using them on the notchback. I know that if you cut them you need to use a sawzall and not to get the springs hot. What do you guys think?

i used a cut-off wheel to cut mine... but i cut more than i wanted so remember that the car will settle some after you reinstall them

so its really safe to do this? the springs won't fly out of place or anything? also does this change the spring rate when you cut it?

I would think it would be unsafe. I would agree that they seem like they'd come out of the pocket easier. Also im almost positive the spring rate will change, How much is the question... I know if seen mini trucks and shit with cut springs and they look like it rides like a skate board.

i cut out a coil and a half out of mine and they were still a pain in the ass to get back in... if you try to get the end of the spring into the pocket on the a arm it wont settle as much that is if you have stock arms

If you use the Mach 1 springs you will be fine because they are a linear 250# spring. You should not cut progressive springs. Spring rate will not change on a linear spring.

Not sure what you mean by fly out of place, but I would remove the spring first and cut out what you want, them reinstall them. Use a cutoff wheel, it will make quick work of them.

I have 3/4 coil removed from my rear springs and it works fine with street and track tires (26.75" to center of fender).

I have d&d coilovers with lakewood 70/30 and 50/50front and rear on the black car and they are ok for the money. What brand did you get for the front and which struts? Im thinking about the tokiko illuminas or strange 10 way adjustable.

I have the Tokico's up front with UPR coilovers. My buddy has the Strange 10 ways and UPR coilovers, both setups seem to work great. Only complaint he has is the struts make noise. Mine are silent.

I have cut springs for frineds cars before, though it is not unsafe you will throw the spring rate off and it will ride like shit. it will not improve the handling, but if you are going after the lowered look and dont mind sacraficing ride quality go for it.

As stated go 1/4 cut at a time as you can alwayse go lower, but if you cut too much your screwed.

I cut 1/2 a coil on my front Eicbach's, and a coil off my rear Roush springs.

Make sure you cut from the top of the spring on the rears, and the bottom of the spring for the fronts.

Use a cut off wheel, and dont even think twice about it, they arent going anywhere with the full weight of the car on them.
