Hey guys im installing a cam in a buddys 87 stang, how do i get the valve springs off without removing the heads... or can i even do it?

I have the spring compressor but the keepers that sit in the retainer wont come off the valve as the valve is moving with the spring.

Time is of the essence guys daylight is fading

Thanks

If you have a air compressor, and the fitting that'll fit into the spark plug hole..thats the easiest way to do each cylinder. It fills the cylinder with air..and holds the valves up while you compress the spring to pop it off.

Dont have that..you have to set each cylinder at top dead center. This way the valves might move down a bit on ya..but it wont fall all the way due to the piston being furthest up on that specific cylinder.

so i have to push the valve into the piston to get it to pop out?

Per say. When your compressing the spring..the valve will move like you said...till it hits the piston. Then the valve cant move. So the valve will stop and the spring will continue to compress.

Push down on the spring really hard until you can pull the retainers out, then all you have to do is pull the old spring off. Just reverse the steps for installation.

FYI: Make sure you don't install the new springs in upside down.

I've heard of people shoving a small (1/4") rope in the cylinder through the spark plug hole too. Then cranking it up til the piston stops.

I've never tried it.

it works, put the piston down, shove in as much rope as you can, and turn the motor by hand till it stops
