cooling issue

remote electric pump
low mounted double pass ron davis radiator
electric fan sealed to radiator with shroud
no thermostat
13lb cap
pump comes on at 165, off at 160 through BS3
there is no trans cooler or intercooler in front of radiator.

-16 out of intake through a radiator cap adapter, then into the upper drivers side of the radiator, exits bottom of drivers side of radiator in to remote mounted aerospace pump, ( pump is mounted low, about 2" above where the water exits the radiator. all -16 to this point. dual -12 out of the water pump into front of block.

there is a -4 line out of the radiator cap adapter that runs to the water tank in the trunk.

was running hot, 220 area. thought i had a air pocket on the top of the passenger side of the radiator, installed a manual relief valve, all water, no air when pressed. when i first filled the cooling system, i purged through the water temp gauge fitting in the stock location on the intake.

took for a ride, got home, water had pushed to the tank in the trunk, about 1-2 cups worth, took the rad cap off, no water, slowly filled back up, jacking car up to get all the air out i could. took for another ride... same thing. water pushed into tank.

suggestions?

i thought of a purge tank possibly, but i cant figure where the air is, the radiator cap adapter is the highest point of the system.

water restrictor on the intake?

higher pressure cap?

ill post a pic of the set up. im not a pic whore, but i want you guys to see what im talking about

Hey Anthony. You need a stat or a restrictor. You are not leaving the water in the rad long enough for it to do it's job. It flows too fast and the rad can't cool it down

Thrrow a moroso restrictor in it and see what happens.

Edit: beat to the post :haha:

No thermo= no restrictions which don't allow the coolant a long enough time in the radiator to actually get cool. Try putting a thermostat in it.

ill try it.

but on my last turbo set up, i had a trans cooler and 3" intercooler in front of a different radiator and no stat or restrictor and that ran 165 no matter what i did. even at woodward cruise in traffic for hours, 90 heat. never went over 165. i had fan on switch at that time. and would turn it off till it got to 180, turn fan back on and it dropped to 165.

just my past experience

i will hit livernois tomorrow. thanks guys

No, I'm on 16hr shifts. Tryin to get a bucket full of cash to finish it all up. Maybe thursday I'll put one in and drive it Saturday

you see overheating issues like this with a low restriction rad and high flow pumps unless you run a restrictor/t-stat

i know its dumb but i seen it happen before. are you sure the fan is going the right way? my buddy had this problem would let it idle and it would never get hot soon as he drove it it would get hot quick. after ripping into it and bitching for a week or so he finally realized the fan was pushing air the wrong way. flipped the wires around and it was at 160 with no restrictor. i dont run a restrictor either in my setup and i cant get it warm enough i have to leave the water pump and fan off for a min just to get it to 160deg

ive done it before too. but not this time.

put the restrictor in today. be next weekend before i can try it though. heres a pic of how much more it will restrict..... not much more than the -16

Hit up a matco or snap on truck and buy a vacu fil system to fill cooling system...eliminates air pockets...upgrade to a 16 pound cap, and put a restrictor in. That remote pump is probly flowing too fast and not leaving water in teh rad long enough to pull the heat out of it. But with your set up the investment in a vac u full system WILL BE PRICELESS!

Airlift is also another brand, you will never be sorry you invested in one.

i didnt read all of the posts but i had the same overheating problem with my old car... i put in a restrictor and it slowed it down but still had the same problem... i put a 160 thermostat in it and it worked like a dream... it ran at 180 when driving and very quickly dropped to 160 when i would stop at red lights

cant use a stat with this style water outlet.

No dude not the roll around one...lol

That one, just suck it up and buy one you will NEVER regret spending the money, specialy with your set up. You can find them on E bay for less i believe.

AHHHH i see. i just googled that vacufill and thats what came up.
