Computer gamers

I miss playing games on the computer. I like my Xbox 360 and all, but it's not the same. I'm more of a keyboard and mouse FPS type and I enjoy the larger servers with more people per team as well. I also miss the clan competitiveness I use to have with BF 1942 mod Desert Combat and Quake 3 Fortress.

I wanna get back into PC gaming but don't have the space for a desk, case, speakers, monitor, etc. I've been looking into getting a laptop for gaming. I just don't know what the best bang for the buck is out there anymore. I've been out of the loop for so long.

Do you guys have any suggestions? So far, the Sager NP8690 is what I'm looking at. If I go this route I want to have this laptop for 3 years. Should I go with the i7 720QM? What GPU? I'm leaning towards the ATI 5870. I want to keep my budget around $2000 +/- a couple hundred.

I plan on playing TF2, maybe WoW or some other MMORPG in the future, Battlefield games like Bad Company 2, some RTS games

I don't know if I want a 17" screen. I think I'd be okay having a 15.6". I don't really care to play Blu-Ray movies but I do have netflix so if I want to watch their content in HD I would want the 1920x1080 screen over the 1600x900 right? I'm more worried about the gaming aspect though.

What do you guys think?

Send a pm to 91Bird305, he's a pc game junkie and knows his computer stuff.
BTW if you play any of the combat games with him, make sure he's on your team lol.

Alienware just released a new one I think. You can even change the mode the computer works in also. Like normal or game mode to conserve battery life and such. I think it was relatively cheap compared to some of their earlier laptops. I'll dih around and see if I can find a link.

Will do.

That new one is a netbook. The 15" isn't worth what they want...they don't even have the newer graphics cards available. It's ugly too. Thanks though.

+1s to you both for responding.

I have a Sager laptop (5690) that I've used for the past 5 years. It's time for a new one, but other than a hard drive failing and a couple of required OS refreshes it's been great while I've had it. If the gaming laptops are still like they were back then they are real battery hogs and a lot heftier than other models which can really be a PITA sometimes. I'm sure it's gotten better though.

Oh ok. I just read a blurb about it in a gamer mag. but it never had anything more than I told you. Sorry.

Yeah, that's okay. I knew right when I read "new" and able to adjust power consumption that it was the 11.6" model. It's pretty badass for a "netbook" though. My configuration would cost $999 haha. That's not really netbook price but I do enjoy the capabilities of my Eeepc netbook and it would be even better with a higher res screen and graphics ability of the Alienware M11x.

lol, thanks. I don't know too much about what's available for laptops vs. desktops though. I'm more of a desktop guy.

Games are starting to utilize quad core processing and directX 11 though. So go with an I7, Windows 7, and a video card that supports directX 11. Anything over 4GB of DDR3 too. Also, do your research and make sure the laptop doesn't run hotter than normal gaming laptops. Heat kills.

Obviously, it isn't completely necessary to go this route. I run a E8400 (Duo Core) processor, windows XP and a ATI 4870 and I can still play BC2 easily. But if I had to build a machine that's going to kick ass for all the future games coming out in the years to come, I would probably go with what was listed above.

That SAGER NP8690 appears to have all of that but I'm just not up to par on my gaming laptops to know if it's a good price or not. LT1Pat deals with laptops a lot so he might know. Obviously I've heard of Alienware and they probably make some wicked stuff, but you're probably paying for the name also.

Thanks. I've looked around a bit the last couple of days and for what I get in the Sager, it's better than anything I can find from any other maker at the price I'm looking to spend.

I wasn't sure if I should go Quad and directx 11 but it seems like if I'm gonna have it for 3 years then I should. It's definitely not necessary now but I gotta look forward...

The only laptop card out there right now that supports directx 11 is the ATI 5870. No Nvidia yet. As far as I can tell.

So if I go Sager, now I need to find the cheapest reseller who also is a good quality company that is gonna be around to support my purchase in the future.

Now I'm also torn on what res screen. If I want to run native res in game it'd be better to get the 1600x900?

well, I think I've decided to just get the Sager NP8690 (Built on Clevo W860CU) Custom Gaming Laptop

15.6" 1920x1080
Intel i7 - 820QM
ATI Radeon Mobility HD5870 1024MB GDDR5 DX11
6GB DDR3 1333MHz Dual channel memory
160GB Intel x25-m SSD

I think I'll go through Xotic PC

I'll have to think about it over the weekend before I pull the trigger on Monday.
