Computer antivirus

Just bought a new laptop so I am in the market for some antivirus and firewall software, currently have the free version of avg loaded on it from the builder I got it from but am wondering what is the best on the market? I have had my identity stolen twice and would like all my personal information that I put on my computer safe, I'm hearing good things about webroot and 50$ for the software does not seem like a bad price for everything it seems to offer and peace of mind it would give me having it.

Just use Windows Defender, it works very good and is very lightweight in resource consumption. I haven't used a 3rd party AV in many years and never have any trouble. On the firewall end, Windows has it's own built in and you can set which programs are allowed inbound and outbound connections. That said, your router should also have a firewall that will provide much better protection than the standard software firewalls.

Ah, I did not know this, so you're saying that comcast has its own firewall built in? what is windows defender? i've never see any program on my computer is it built into windows 7 thats the OS im running.

Is this a new or used laptop? Windows 7 stopped receiving security updates 2 years ago. If you're still running 7, it would be wise to upgrade to 10 since Microsoft isn't plugging security holes unless you purchased extended support.

Do you solely use your computer? Do any incomputerate children or technologically unaware elderly access your computer? if the latter is the case, stop letting them use your personal computer, assembly a cheap well protected computer, and NEVER let those that could leave your info vulnerable on to your computer.

I purchased the computer from a company, I had the choice to have windows 10 or windows 7 so I chose windows 7 because I hate the way the os of 10 is set up, I used it on my sisters laptop and hated everything about it. Beigg I am the only person that uses this computer it is my own personal I have a password on it also so no one can try to use it if anyone happens to try I would not allow anyone but myself to use it

Microsoft won't end security updates for Windows 7 until Jan. 14, 2020, it ended mainstream support in 2015 (telephone and stuff) not security updates.

Thanks for the tip. I was under the impression they stopped all support for everybody but their corporate customers.
