You can beat it hard and it will love it. Just make sure you don't over-rev it. They can tap valves to pistons and bend up pushrods when you do that.

Will the rev-limiter not prevent this from happening, or is it luck of the draw that this may/maynot happen bouncing off the limiter?

The rev limiter won't help if you hit the wrong gear when getting on it. Seen a few people hurt an engine with an accidental 2nd to 1st shift.
