Cometics

Okay... after blowing ANOTHER head gasket, I decided to go with Cometics because I figured if I had to do all that work it would be worth my money to go with something that won't blow so I don't have to go through that all again.. (it's not so easy doing that stuff IN MY DRIVEWAY!)

Anyway... since I made this swap, my car is overheating... I've never had these problems before. Does anyone know if there are more holes in a felpro gasket than a cometic... I have Windsor Sr. heads and I'm thinking that maybe there are some blockages where there wasn't a hole cut and coolant isn't getting in... this may be totally wrong but I'm hoping someone knows.

you probably put them on backwards, they have a tab that is supposed to go out the front...but there is a passage that if put on backwards they will not cool right...

Is the tab something I could see without pulling the intake? When I put the gaskets on, I was having a hard time and there are tabs with the little gold holes in them to use to help put the gaskets on (with the heavy head, it was helpful)... are those the tabs you are talking about? (Sorry if I'm dumb, I haven't done this on my own before).

yeah you should see those sticking out the front of the head, i dont remember if they stick out the back as well...but they are labeled front and back...but there is a hole in the front and not in the back, so if they are on backwards it wont flow correctly...that is the only thing i can think of unless you have a air bubble in the coolant. let it run until it gets to operating temp and check the coolant again after the thermostat opens, you might have a problem with you thermostat too, if its not opening you will have that problem also...

i'd visually inspect any gasket before installation, especially cometics. they have had some quality control issues with their headgaskets recently.

Do you spray the car? If so how much?

No spray... But I do plan to do something of the sort in the future. As soon as some funds open up I'm hoping to set it up with spray and maybe a blower or something.

I know the cometics aren't necessary at this point but, I have a bit of a hard time doing things on that motor and figured I'd go with something I knew I couldn't blow.

I inspected them to the best of my ability... (which isn't much)... but I didn't see any uneven cuts or noticeable defects. Did the standard making sure the bore was to the correct size and what not.

Anything else I should look for?

Sounds like you either put the on wrong or you have another problem.

Did you have the heads checked?

Maybe the are messed up. Did you mill the or at least do a clean up mill on them?

The guy I got the heads off of had them cleaned up for me at Dart. I am going to have them milled when I pull them off next time because I have blown head gaskets on the same side in the same spot twice now so I'm sure that is one of my problems.
It's just that since I swapped gaskets, I can drive the car about 5 miles and the thermo pegs. When I did everything I put a brand new thermostat in it (i'll have to test that to make sure it opens), flushed the radiator and even added a bottle of the expensive water wetter. I didn't change anything else on my set up and I have a really good fan.
I did burp the radiator after I was finished too.

you should change the thermostat again, i have seen brand new ones not work right or maybe its in backwards...

I stopped at Detroit Speed Shop today and took at look at the Cometics... I'm about 100% sure I am an idiot and put atleast one of the gaskets on backwards. I will replace the thermostat too. I was running it without a thermo and just a restrictor plate before... think I should do that again?

i always ran a 160 thermostat in my car, alot of my friends dont use anything...but if it gets hot that fast im thinking it a bad thermostat, a head gasket would probably take a lil longer to overheat unless you had both on backwards...

also, unless you going really fast with tons of cylinder pressure you dont need cometics...if your hurting head gaskets then its probably your tune and not a cylinder pressure problem....

I know I don't exactly need cometics, it is just that I'm limited on time and tools (I don't even own a garage) so working on my car is a bit of a task. I went with the cometics thinking I wouldn't have to worry about blowing a head gasket again and that way I won't have to remove the heads (I also cannot physically lift the heads off the block and I hate bugging other people to do it for me).

As soon as I get a chance to pull it apart, I'm planning on milling the heads and testing the thermostat. I am just trying to plan it all out before I do anything so I don't waste any time or run into too many surprises when I am doing this... I hate messing with the motor when I'm not doing something to make me go faster.

i didnt have a good experience with cometics, they were seeping water into the cylinders...i dont know if your car is a everyday car or just a weekend car but if it was a everyday car i dont think id use the cometics...

or you could have your new sugar glider scream at the heads and they'll probably just jump off

I will give that a try...
And I probably could lift aluminum heads, I just don't think I can lift the bill for those right now.
In a couple years, I will definitely be your best customer until then, I'll just bring random animals into the store.
