Clutch change on a 95 Escort GT...anyone?

I am not sure if my clutch is bad or the cable got stretched but does anyone know any 'secrets' or anything on working on these? It has issues going into gear from neutral then once in gear it starts moving (with foot on clutch still) I have to hit the throttle so it doesn't die and it will accelerate enough to get me off of the clutch. It just all of a sudden happened, there has been a slight 'clunk' feel on my foot when releasing the clutch. Any help is greatly appreciated!

it doesn't have a cable, its hyd. Check for leaks, make sure its full. You can try to bleed it, but if that don't fix it, you need a clutch!
