Cleaning rusty cooling system ?

So I've been working on my dad's bug project pretty steady for a couple months now.. and I got the engine fired for the 1st time in 8 yrs a couple weeks ago.. But he did some custom plumbing using whatever pipe he had laying around to get the coolant from the engine back to the radiator.. (yes i just said coolant and radiator when refering to a bug) what can I flush through the system to get rid of the corrosion buiuld up and rust scale in the pipes that wont ruin the gaskets and such?? Ive told him 100 times to take it to an exh shop and just have them run the lines with exh pipe but he's old and stubborn :icon_hamm

COolant flushes have a rust and scale remover in them.
yea but how aggressive are they ?? My dad used swing set tube along with some hammock tube (yea I know) If i weren't laid off id just go buy some silicone coolant hose and run it front to back.. i'll suggest the CLR idea to him

BG makes a decent 2 part that works.
yea ive used their stuff before. ALl of their products work great IMO but im wondering if something like that would be aggressive enough for what we need. im thinking the CLR will do the job once the water reaches temp.

Perhaps...I would try the clr. I have never heard of using it but since Dave mentioned I think he is right and it should work. Post up when done....would like to hear the results.

Well I didnt use CLR but did use something similar. the combo of running it up to operating temp and flushing with the garden hose i got most of it.. I did it the 1st time with the Iron remover crap the rest of the times just straight water.. Finally filled it with coolant last night. Now if i can get the damn thing to run right.

WHINK Rust remover, the best EVER, don't know how safe it is in the engine, but if you have hard water you can literally watch it dissolve on your sinks or toilets or whatever. I shit you not. Whink, it comes in a small brown bottle and is around 5.50-6 bucks. You can get it at wally world in the chemical section. This stuff is flippin' amazing. It's almost like one of those info mercial things that actually work. Like I said, don't have a clue how it would react in a cooling system, but holy crap, I have well water that has about as much rust in it as a '74 chevy and all I have to do is spray a bit on and watch it go away, no scrubbing or nothing. Maybe I'll try it in one of my not so loved vehicles sometime:D

Damn, I sound like, who was that guy that did all the info mercials that just died, bobby, or billy somebuddy?
