Chrysler mini power steering cooler?

My sister owns a 2001 Chrysler Voyager mini van. The power steering cooler is leaking. The person that is working on it. Told my sister that a universal cooler will not work without relocating it. A direct replacement cooler is a dealer only part. Does this van really need a power steering cooler? Could be it bypassed?

Go to parts galore and get one

Being an Engineer myself, I would never add a part that was unnecessary. Unnecessary parts (or ones that add minimal increases in performance) add cost and are something else that can fail. My suggestion would be to replace the cooler. But, I wouldn't worry too much if it was a direct replacement or an aftermarket unit. I would guess that they would have to relocate the aftermarket unit because of space or mounting concerns.

It's been a few months since I've been under one of those, but I do think you could get an aftermarket one and make it work. Something like a very small trans cooler. The cooler itself is roughly 6" x 2", and you don't have much more space under there. It's not impossible to make an aftermarket one work, but it'll be a lot of hassle, time, and planning compared to getting an OEM one (New or Used).

I guess I should update this. The guy that was working on the van decided to take the old cooler off and go to the local parts store and match one up. They found one that was pretty close and put it on.
