Chrome rims

What is th ebest polish to bring back some chrome rims? i just picked some up for the DD at a killer price that need a little polishing. Whats the best way to go about it? Also do you think I could powder coat them since I really wanted black rims anyways?
 
It would cost too much to strip/powder coat them. If you want to spend the $ thats up to you.

As for polishing them are they chromed steel or aluminum?
 
Good question, I want to say chrome aluminum. Any particular way to tell? They remind me of an alloy wheel with a chrome finish. They are made by American racing.

would they look too crappy if I sand blasted them and painted them you think?
 
There are lots of polishes that will bring back the shine. Zymol comes to mind. You can check at the auto stores to see what they recommend. But if you are planning to change the color I guess I would not worry about it. They can be powercoated for around $400 locally. Check with FADI as he had his vette wheels done.
 
A good way to tell if it's polished aluminum, is get some mothers aluminum polish. Buff the polish into part of the wheel, and if the polish turns black, it's polished aluminum. Chrome and polished aluminum is pretty easy to tell apart when clean.

I recommend using a mothers powerball with billet polish. Of course, if they're chrome, go ahead and use a carnuba wax instead of billet polish. The powerball works wonders.

$265? Holy shnikes thats cheaper than I thought it would be. I may just go that way. They are for my truck so I am not concerned with weight too much. I mean rotating mass is bad but its not like I drive my truck like its at the track or anything. Ok so maybe I do :lol: they're only 18's maybe I should sell them and step up to some 20's? in black.
 
If they are clearcoated you really aren't polishing anything.

But I have seen some people strip the clearcoat off of factory wheels and then polish them and they come out looking great.

I have a powerball and it works awesome.
 
use eagle one billet polish with the powerball...It is the best stuff i have used on my wheels. I have a set of Weld Prostars on my 48 Chevy that I thought were completely shot and needed to be professionally polished out but that eagle one made them look like brand spanking new. The billet polish has a chemical characteristic that actually pulls the nickel out of the aluminum and uses it as a secondary polishing agent, hence the "black stuff" is actually part of the cleaning process...
