I am working on a 2000 3500HD 6.5L and I keep getting code PO251. I did the pin point test on it and it led to a inj. pump bad. Well GM has a 100,000 warrenty on the powertrain. I had to call them and they agreed to cover the pump, but I had to take our truck to a dealer to have them run the test on it. This problem was a random thing that would come and go. So of course after I cleared the code and took it to them they couldn't find anything wrong. It acted up on them and they put a pump in it and said they drove it around and it was fine. I pick it up this morning and WHAM the check engine light comes on about 40 miles after. I had my scanner with me just in case and PO251 came back on. I clear the code and the truck is now running fine. Anyone run into this random problem with these 6.5 diesels??? Cause it's driving me crazy, and everything is checking out good.

Yeah pull the junk electronic pump off your 6.5. It is going to have trouble with the ultra low sulfur fuels. cuases binding in the pump advance mechanism and in the pump itself on other internal components. Instead of consinuing to screw around with it do what i did to my tow truck. check out pennisular disel and get a db2 marine mchanical. With the new pump from pennisular and the line kit ( $1200) i doubled my fuel economy and picked up a bunch of power. the standyne unit sucks. However if you have an issue with the lift pump it will cuase cavitation and pump overheating which can set a p0251.

Yepper smokes like a bitch when its cold to. thats got more to do with old glow plugs then anything else however. Either way i have all the parts numbers for the stuff needed to swap it out.

Still check FP a bad lift pump will cuase rampant and repatative pump failure.

Yeah that's what code it's setting. I told the dealership what it was doing and they looked at me like i was crazy. Well GM covered a new pump and they HAD to put it on and pop our company 650.00 for labor. There is no check engine light on now....but I will drive it around for a bit and see if it happens again. It drove me crazy cause everything checked out good. i even did the ALLDATA pin point test and it led to the pump. But thanks for your help I will keep that in mind what you said.

It seems like it has power now that the pump has been changed. But thanks for again for your help.
