So my 06 2500hd is starting to show its age so I'm thinking of moving it to temp use and sitting into a new Malibu .. Obviously the Malibu would go full coverage, but I can't justify continuing full coverage on a truck that will sit 75% of the time..

So my question for the car insurance gurus is this , is there a storage type of ins that will still let me drive the truck when I need to? Truck is paid off so that's no issue.

i think you're option in that situation is to just put storage on the truck and call ahead to your agent to enact a policy for the time you're goin to use it. ???

yes there is such a thing as storage, it removed the liability portion of it. however you will need to call your agent if you plan on driving it and have them re add the coverage. some companies will not constantly add and remove if you plan to use it every weekend then they will sometimes tell you you need to leave it on or off. or at least leave it on for a few weeks at a time.

Was really trying to avoid the PLPD route since the truck still has decent value but it may end up that route.. keeping the truck mostly to tow the toys around and for the mornings where the rds are less than desirable..

What about storage in the summer

Or PLPD in the summer and then full coverage in the winter (when more accidents happen/you will drive it more)

Making it not your primary vehicle will knock down the premium a lot. My agent usually asks about % usage etc. There are also policies that are comp and collision if the incident is NOT your fault. Somebody hits you, your covered. You hit a bus load of nuns, no collision coverage for your ride. Also consider that for PLPD, the mini tort is now $1000.

Make sure that if you do place storage only insurance on it that your lender allows it. I've repossessed a lot of cars over the years because of a technicality regarding this issue. Make sure you tell your lender ahead of time so you don't get surprised later if the repo man comes a knockin'.

Making it a non-primary doesnt always lower it. I added a 97 Neon as my primary and my 13 F150 as pleasure, it was a couple dollar difference.
