I always try to get on the private lakes but I'm way north of you.

Under the Sunshine Skyway. That's about as far west as you can go. If you go out into the Gulf, the Grouper should be bitting.

i seems to always make a killing on perch on lake st. claire, but that isnt exactly west side.

ice fishing or summer fishing? could try kent lake, never fished it myself but i know it has a ton of fish in it. huron river gets steelhead in the winter/spring as well as walleye and pike.
