cam help needed, where they make power...

How do you determine where your cam will begin to "come alive" and make power at the given RPM range?
I am eventually trying to pick a lock up converter for an automatic trans and would like to get a better understanding for this so I can make the right decision. The car has not been on a dyno before, nor do I really think it will be before I actually go automatic.
Some cams say they function between 1500 and 6000, that seems kind of odd because thats really the range of the engine, vs a certain area where it will perform best. Obviously advancing or retarding cam timing will have an impact on this, but for general idea, what can I do/use? I am not very understanding on this aspect of cam selection.

Getting a custom converter i assume? Gather as much info about teh combo as possible, give said info to reputable converter company and let them build the converter to spec. Well worth the money in the end. They know what they're doing and will take teh guess work out of it on your end.

yes, eventually, right now I just gotta get it together and running. I have all the engine info as I put it all together, but I'd like to know how to "read" a cam and understand it better.
