Really wanted to do this as I went (day by day) but laptop crashed and its finished, posting it anyways..
Bought this car with less than 15,000 miles on a fully rebuilt 306 thinking it had a bad input shaft on trans or something out of balance, flywheel or balancer..After replacing everything along with trans,I knew something was going on with #5 main cap..I could feel a VERY bad vibe in the back of the engine..Vibe was so bad that it broke one of the bolt hole ears off my T5 Tremec (where the trans bolts to the bell) and it put a nice crack in the 2nd T5 I put in it :x ..Reason I put the 2nd trans in was I though the input shaft bearing was bad which wasn't ..It also snapped off 3 of the balancer bolts in my new SFI balancer that I was lucky and very thankful that Carl got out for me
,thats how bad this vibe was..
Anyways,
I ended up buying a brand new Jasper long block (306 .30 over 302 SBF) that someone had sitting around for 3-4 years for $400.00 bucks, was never installed..Got it DIRT cheap because it needed cleaned up big time, was never covered with a plastic bag and was dirty as hell..Took me 2 days just to clean the whole short block..
Heres what I did,
The engine that came in the car was a fully rebuilt 306 with less than 15,000 miles..When I took it apart, the rings still had the black coat on them so it wasn't even broke-in yet ..Pistons are forged .30 over TRW's and the ones in the Jasper engine are .30 over Hyper/cast..Going to spray the car so swapped pistons and rods ..Pretty much started on it Nov 15th and finished it Nov 30th so took me 6 days total to start and finish this..Thats taking the whole drive train out, taking both engines apart down to the block, rebuilding one from ground up,putting everything back together and having it running prefect on first start-up..LONG hours of busting my ass paid off because she runs so damn nice..Gotta give thanks to Andy K Jr also..He stopped by and helped me install the pistons..Haven't done a big job like thing in over 10 years so wanted to be sure they went in right..
Heres a video of how bad the vibe was..
