Black Lab Puppy???

I ended up going out towards Muskegon when we got Riley. We paid $200 for him; down here everything was closer to $400-$600.

That's not too bad. I am looking for a pure bred black lab, not mixed. AKC would be great if it was not to expensive.

I just bought a pure bred AKC certified black lab a little over a year ago. You have to pay between $500-900 for these. The thing is as they age, if they have genetics for hip dysplasia, which most of the less expensive non certified ones do, it will cost you more with surgeries and care and youll have fewer enjoyable years with your dog. That sucks and was worth an extra few hundred to me, but to each their own. There is no guarantee that it wont happen either way, but if they are certified and not over weight, youll have the best odds.

He was purebred with AKC papers that we never bothered to file. If I recall correctly, he also had papers on showing the parents were negative for hip dysplasia. The guy was an infrequent backyard breeder; biggest problem I had when buying is that he handled all of the vaccinations himself and didn't really have paperwork on them. Everything is fine though.

Out of total curiosity, not preaching, why pure bred? Unless you plan to breed it your self or just want it to have 'papers'?

I have had several "labs" and I prefer English labs personally. (blocker head and better personality) Pics of my pup...
My Mom has american labs (field) and they are HYPER to say the least.

Just because the parents are negative for hip dysplasia , doesn't guarantee he will not be.

nothing to with breeding actually for me. BUT for health reasons and TRAINING reasons. A good line makes training WAY easier!!!!!!

Black dogs are the hardest to place in new homes, Checkout local shelters for a new buddy :)

www.MichiganAnimalRescueLeague.org is in Pontiac for one. Petfinder will have a few others :)

Maybe I should clarify, lol. I am looking for a pure breed black lab. I don't think I will be able to find a pup that is pure breed at a shelter. I guess I am going to check some of the local sporting goods shops for postings. I plan on training it to be a hunting dog.

You can rescue purebred black labs, you don't have to get it from a breeder.....

Looking for another pure breed male with papers to train and probably stud. I used to raise beagles and got one great dog and used him to hunt and stud. I was then able to get pick of the litter for the stud and get another good dog that my dog helped to train. Kind of cycle them out. Have one that hunts for awhile and "trains" the others, then when they get older take them out of the field.
