Bathroom remodel

Anyone have any luck with hiring someone to remodel their home, specifically a bathroom? I've been saying I'm going to do it for two years now and it turns out I've been lying to myself...who would have thought. I'll need someone capable of drywall, paint, plumbing, possibly removing an old exterior window and putting in a new one depending on the design of the new shower, etc.

I've tried searching around online but there seems to be very few reviews on the handful of companies that pop up in my area, so I figured I'd ask to see if anyone has had luck with someone before I start calling around. I'll probably get a couple of estimates and go from there, but I'm looking to have it done as soon as it works with someone else's schedule.

My old neighbor's brother Bob is a contractor. He did a LOT of work on my Waterford house. And his work is top notch. Not always the fastest but he doesn't cut corners and does it right. Did a bathroom in the house across from me and a HUGE addition to my neighbor's house while I lived there. The tilework in that bathroom was amazing! I am on his list for our new house to have some things taken care of.

Maybe it is because I live in the Grosse Pointes, but every time I get a bathroom estimate it comes in at $17,000. So yea, I am doing it myself for about 1/5 of that.

I got one about a year ago for $8,000 but we've since changed our mind on what we want and are looking to actually move on it now. This is a rather small bathroom and all things considered, it's only redoing half of it. The toilet, vanity, lighting, mirror, etc. are all fine. It's really just the shower we want replaced, but it will include knocking down a wall and moving the water lines to a wall that's shared with the garage.

I'm sure I'm capable of doing it, but I'd rather hear my wife say, "Why isn't he done yet?" instead of, "Why aren't you done yet?" because she expects everything to take "a day or two".

As long as you are OK with a plastic tub and enclosure it should be pretty cheap. It is when you go tile that it gets expensive.

That's what we have now. I think our preference is to go with tile instead of the plastic enclosure. That's what we'll be getting estimates on anyhow.
