Spy photographer Brenda Priddy is organizing an online auction to help pay for the medical bills of veteran journalist Frank Washington, who was severely beaten and stabbed this winter near his Detroit home.
Among the items on eBay: five Dodge Challenger prototype pistol-grip shifters, two rare, framed sketches of mid-engine Corvettes from around 1973 and a $1,200 Michelin gift certificate.
The goal is to raise funds to pay for the steep medical costs of Washington, who has covered the auto industry for four decades. He's a free-lancer, contributing to the Web site AboutThatCar.com, and doesn't have a formal health care plan.
Washington is one of the most well-respected journalists in Detroit, and has written for Automotive News, Fortune, Time, Newsweek and the New York Times.
He was injured while taking an early-morning walk near his home on the city's west side, sustaining facial injuries and stab wounds.
The incident attracted an outpouring of support from journalists and automakers in the area. A benefit in February at a Detroit-area restaurant, Seldom Blues, attracted $5,000 donations from the Big 3, Toyota and Volkswagen.
Another benefit is planned for April 12 at a local watering hole, New Way Bar, said Sam Locricchio, a local public relations operative and a member of the band Exhaustones, which is playing that night.
Priddy is still looking for items for her auction. It also includes a 1981 BMW sculpture that commemorated the opening of the automaker's test center in Munich and was donated by a local journalist who attended the event. The auction is also offering a five-hour driving class and a trip to a driving school.
It can be found at: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZbrendapriddycharityauctions
Donations can also be sent to the Frank Washington Fund at Charter One Bank at 633 Notre Dame, Grosse Pointe, MI, 48230.
