Auto Trans Issue

Authentic Strummer
This is for auto trans guys. I dont know much about auto but hopefully someone will know more with the info I post.

99 Monte Carlo
3.8L
Trans was "rebuilt" @ 115K, now has 162K

It started when cruising in OD @ like 70 the car kinda jumped back and forth like it was a miss but I looked at the RPM jumping from like 2200-2450 and then back down to 2200.. It did this like 3 or 4 times with in a minute and then was fine for the rest of the 20 miles or so.

I thought it was the torque converter locking and unlocking but...

It started to do the same thing when putzin around on city roads at like 45... and then it also started to shift kinda hard from like 2-3, and 3-4, so I put it in Drive and the symptomes seemed to go away.

So I dont know if it is OD being kicked out and back in or if its the TC.

Any idea / help?

Thx.:headscrat

did you check the fluid level... a friend has the same car and it does the same thing... to me it felt like it was locking and unlocking... thats just my opinion... its been going on in his car for a while just because he doesnt have another way to work

Whats the proper way?

In Park, with the engine running right?

im pretty sure... i normally just check the color and smell to make sure its not burned when i change my oil because it doesnt leak or anything... the fluid will look orange or brown and will smell terrible if its starting to burn up... ive blown quite a few and not from abuse... just from buying older cars and having them fail

im assuming that the TPS is a sensor... does that have to be taken in to a shop or is it something that can be done easily in a driveway... ill have my friend take a look at it because he thinks hes going to have to spring for a new trans soon

can be done with a dvom . if its fast enough. a sweeping volt meter actual works better for TPS issues in some cases
can you see this?

The problem is the pressure control solenoid, when it gets hot it shorts out and commands full line pressure. This is the whining that you are hearing from the trans, its the pump. No cel will set but it will store a code of p1811 max adapt shift. I have done alot of these for this problem. You can diagnosis this yourself when its happening and the vehicle is shifting hard stop shut it off wait a minute restart and see if the whining is gone and it shifts normal again. If so thats the problem.

Chaning the Pressure selenoid requires removing the side cover from the trans. It is not a fun job.
