Anyone using or used a MSD(6530) 6AL-2?

I need help with the programmable 6Al-2(6530) that I installed. I think it's similar to the 7531 but not sure. I have a few questions to make sure I have everything correct. I have a msd dizzy and coil. The dizzy is locked out.

1. I set total timing and then use the run retard curve table to take out timing?
2. If I set the dizzy at 34* and at 500-900 I set my do at 15 that means from 500-900 my timing is 19*?
3. As I ramp up rpm and at 2,000 I have my point set at 0 that means I
My timing would be 34*?
4. How do I know what is actually loaded up to the msd? Does it blink when a download is complete?

I had the car running yesterday with the dizzy not locked out so the timing was mechanical and didn't have any settings in the run retard curve table. It ran but I had to much advance so it had a hard time starting. Today I locked out the dizzy, checked tdc and then eyeballed the timing around 34* till I get a timing light but I couldn't get it running today, after a few tries I gave up.

Thanks
Mike

Not too much help (I havent worked with the new 6AL2 yet)... but there should be a troubleshooting diag list in the instructions. If not, call MSD to help. Their tech line is pretty good for ruling out issues or at least pointing you in the correct direction.

Was there too much total advance or was it coming in too fast? Have you considered changing the springs. The chart that MSD provides with the blue/black/silver springs is pretty damn close to when the advance comes in. The spacers will get you pretty close to your total advancement as well.

One of the members here ran my distributor on his Sun machine to verify my spring/spacer choice (it was within a degree or two and advanced just as MSDs chart said it would)

On Saturday I didn't have anything programmed to the box and the dizzy was stock out of the box from msd so it stil had mechanical advance too. Now that it's locked out there's no springs, weights or bushings. I'll have to call msd and see what they say but I won't have time till Tuesday to do that. It's funny that you said "the new 6AL-2" because when I bought it over the winter I thought it was new to but it's been out 4-5 years already lol. It's seems to be a great little box for the money but only time will tell
