my friend was running a site hosted on another server, and the company hosting buying the server, don't know the whole situation, went away, so he needs a new host server?? anyone able to help with this

There are plenty of web hosts out there, the cost depends on how much bandwidth you need. Most usually start at $10 to $20 per month, but the price goes up according to bandwidth requirements. I think somebody here does web hosting, can't remember who though. Maybe somebody else will chime in.

I use Dreamhost for my server; it seems robust and they keep throwing more bandwith at me, but my needs for the whole thing are incredibly minimal to begin with. With that, I can't speak much to what they can handle, but I remember when I chose them 10 or so years ago everyone was raving about their services so I figure they're worth looking mentioning/looking at.

little2v I think was a hosting provider. But not sure if he does small projects or just large scale. Sounds like he needs a shared server and not a dedicated. Otherwise he would know a lot more about this. So really, if he is not high bandwidth or streaming, any provider will work just about. If you are looking for longevity and not price, look at big names like google, go daddy, and a few others. If looking for price and he keeps a back up of his site, go for one that offers what he needs with a few extras. The GUI will make a difference too. Some places make it easy, others not so much. Just about all of them offer a test drive. So google, web hosting, and add in things like streaming, bandwidth required, or server type needed. These things should whittle your choices down.
