Anyone here work as a GM Skilled Trades Mechanic?

Right now I am currently a GM salaried employee. Go back 7 months ago I was contract for GM and I took a pay cut to go to this direct position.


Now I have the opportunity to interview for a GM Skilled trades position. From what information I can gather about it is that it may pay more than what I am making now as a salaried white collar worker. Also UAW employees get Vision coverage, and vision coverage is not available to salary employees. Also, on the note of benefits, I think that the UAW employees do not pay anything out of their paychecks for their benefits, and as salary have to pay around $100 a month for the benefits. I am looking to speak with someone who knows a little more about this, or has been in same shoes.

A very good friend of mine might fall in this category. He works in Troy doing prototype stuff as a fabricator. I know he is paid well and has good benefits. I would definitely consider his job skilled trade.

Good opportunity depending on the plant lol. I work at Detroit Hamtrmck assembly and we are losing trades due to the cancellation of second shift. They do not pay for benefits out of pocket. Good luck
 
Check the Local 160 website and contact them. They're the local for all skilled trades at the Tech Center. A few years ago I could've been a much bigger help since I was pretty tight with the old president, but he retired and I switched offices so I'm unfamiliar with who's running the show now.
 
PM me your number and a good time to call, my brother was an experimental mechanic at Buick City and didn't want to follow his job to Warren when the plant closed so he got another skilled trade to stay closer to home.

I did. I worked for GM for 6 months, but they hired me in as a temp at $21/hr in hopes of making me permanent. They played the horse chasing the carrot game with me and kept pushing back the permanent hire date. A lot of the guys that hired in with me didn't end up getting a permanent job until 2 or 3 years down the road. I was losing money paying my health insurance out of pocket, so I went back to my old job at the credit union. If they did make me permanent, I'd probably still be there.
 
Wouldn't part of the question be the earning potential of where you're at? Most of your questions are more about the present time (which is totally fine, just offering another view point).

I'm GM salary and I know there are a few of us here like that. No idea what level anyone else is and I absolutely recognize one area isn't the same as the other, but I won't be leaving any time soon.

On a different topic, there is a MASSIVE amount of overlap between the different pay bands, so never consider that as a good or bad thing when looking at other GM positions. Always focus on the money itself.
