I know I showed it to people at Kens last night...but still can't get over how she walked away from it, all smiles.

LEGGE OK

Katherine Legge was indeed fortunate to walk away -- sort of -- from a colossal crash in the closing stages of the Road America Champ Car race. Legge was having one of the best races of her rookie Champ Car season and running in sixth place when the main element of her PKV Racing Lola's rear wing fell-off on the approach to the 180 mph turn known as "The Kink."

Legge's car swapped ends and slid backwards into the outside retaining wall at virtually unabated speed. The car then bounded high in the air against the debris fence and went into a terrifying series of barrel rolls before the engine/gearbox broke away from the cockpit which continued tumbling through the grass. The race was stopped to enable emergency workers to attend to Legge, clean-up the debris from the crash and repair the damage to the fence.

But before crash clean-up had been completed, Legge bounded out of the track's medical center and waved to the crowd of onlookers before returning to complete her post incident medical check-up.

"I am a bit shaken, but I'm okay. All my bits are intact, so that just goes to show how strong Champ cars are. It was a big impact, but hopefully everything will be fine for the next race at Surfers Paradise. I don't think you are really aware of what is going on when you have a situation like I had. All of a sudden the car just sped up and hit the wall. Then I see the ground and there is dirt coming into the cockpit -and I see the fence - honestly you are thinking what is going to happen next. I think I saw parts breaking off all around me. And I think I saw the engine split away because the thing I was thinking about the most was that the car was going to catch fire. Then when the engine went away, I though okay that's good. To be honest I think I had my eyes closed for lots of it, but it is a bit scary."
