I got a bit of a problem here, and need some advice.
i bought a Draw tite Factory plug in harness today and hooked up my brake controller well i look at the wiring in the instructions and it dont match up with the wires on the pigtail. So i go probe it with it plugged in in the truck everythings right cept the brake switch wire. its hot with the pedal release then goes out with it depressed ? WTF ! this is facotry dodge wiring ! well i go probe my dads truck . Same thing hot release cold pressed.. his controller works FINE..
So is this the norm ?? is thw wiring harness wrong or is the controller shit ? Cause i hooked it al up and the controller is on til i press the brakes.. so im like wtf out of curiosity hit the overide switch.. smoke comes out of the controller.. I yanked that harness plug out like a pair jeans at a playboy party !
So umm yea.. any ideas

I had the same problem with my controller when I installed it on my last denali. There was nothing wrong with the way it was wired, however I was testing it without the trailer harness connected to the truck. When I connected it, everything worked fine, but when it was not connected, there would be no current like you are saying. I believe this is because the trailer wiring connects the circuit for the controller. Without the harness connected the current would basically stop at the plug in the back and not complete the loop. Let me know if this helps. Jeff

So i would have to unplug the controller when im not towing ?? :dontknow: never heard of that.. i think im gona run a stand alone Stop lamp wire from the cold side of the brake light switch. now i just gota find that little prick.

Why didnt you have me do it wed. when I go to ann arbor for thanksgiving? I pass your exit on 23 going down there. I only wired up like 200 trucks this summer for trailer wiring and brake controllers.

Peace

Ive done enough to know what im doing its not hard by any means when using the pigtails.. but some dipshat at ***** switched the wires on the controler when they were using it.. so the color coding on the wires were off (Generic Color Coding for controllers.) besides this is by far the shittiest brake controler ive ever used. and i know its not cause i smoked it cause i tested it numerous times afterwords.. just pplain sucks.. im ordering my Prodigy on my next paycheck.
I just needed a controller in the truck for my trip last night to Go get Melissa's truck..

When you going to get Mel's truck?

yeah
there is no common theme for controller wiring . black is power on some, blue, red ,white?
why don't they do it the correct way.
I fixed more than a few while at the dealer.
then comes the fact that the Oem's change the pigtails too. Same wires, just in differant positions on the pig tail so you can't use say a 2001 tail on a 2003

Black-Ground
Blue-power to the trailer brakes from contrller
Red-Stop lamp switch
White-12power to controller
Thats what ive seen on 99% of the controllers ive done.. This last being hat 1% the ground was green

thats how most are. but alot are not. I have gotten screwed by it before too. the fords even have a second plug just like the controller plug thats wired differant for a bed camper

Well see there it is.. I've never wired a ford nor towed with one... :icon_mrgr

all the oems come with plugs with factory 7 way harness's
you have to put your pigtail on the controller. The problem is that each controller manufacture uses different color wiring. There doesn't seem to be a set standard for controllers like the rest of the OEM trailer wiring

If you buy a Hidden Hitch controller it comes with a Cheat sheet and tells you all the companies different wiring. I have like 3 of them in my tool box from work.

Not when I buy it. I pay cost. So that 59.99 controller becomes $27
