Any Diesel Excursion owners out there?

Thinking about finding one for the wife, we have an expedition now and she's looking for some better eco, somewhere in the high teens city and low 20's on highway. found a few on craigs, pricing seems very affordable. anyone have one of these? just looking for some input.

Thanks!

How many miles is wife gonna drive this truck a year?

I just sold my Ford diesel pick up, I just didn’t like a diesel.

If you only drive your truck like I did, say 5,000 miles a year,

then a gas truck would probably be a better fit for you folks.

Otherwise, I really didn’t understand why everyone seems to

Think diesel is so much better. Yes I know the diesel gets better

mileage, I also know it costs a LOT more to buy, maintain &

diesel fuel costs more, hence the better mileage doesn’t matter!

she drives on average 25k per year.. she pounds the mileage on like nobody's buisness which is why were looking for something to handle the high miles. the expedition is an 05 with the 5.4 and she's lucky to get 13 mpg and with diesel only being an average of $.38 higher than gas it seems like a no brainer. we have plenty of use for the extra room and take alot of trips north and pull the occasional small trailer.. we're thinking this may be a smart idea.

A guy at work has one. Has done some work on it (maintenance, updates, fixes) and is getting anywhere from 18-20mpg with it. Whether he is pulling or not.

There are some things with the 7.3 that can be done to improve them. He loves it.

Diesel Excursion =Badass! I used one a few times to pull a travel trailer, and it was great, plus it's a lot of fun to shoe around town.

IF Ford ever gets one in production again... I will buy one... I ALWAYS loved the diesel X's

The one I'm looking at has the 6.0 but head studs, EGR delete and tune is already done by the Late Mike Halas..

If Hallas had his hands on it, then that's a totally different story.
He knew ford diesels like no other

They are on crack if they are saying 20mpg with a 7.3 or a 6.0!!! Unless its a 2WD and is in the weeds.

Happens more than you think..

Check my signature. I have gotten AWESOME fuel mileage in my truck once!!! But I regularly see 19+ to 22mpg on long freeway trips. For the best mileage I leave the chip set on the 100hp setting. Inflate the tires about 5-7 psi over optimum, but never over what the sidewall says. I do not use the cruise control in the hills, I only use it on flat ground. I try to keep the rpm under 2100 and the EGT under 675-725. My typical cruise speed is between 68-72mph. Towing a 10k trailer the best I have gotten is right at 17mpg.Hope this helps.

The 2003 Excursion with just a full 4" exhaust that I have, I usually get between 19-22 mpg on long trips, however I never drive it over 2100 rpm, this is a 4x4 with the 3:73 ratio. Now if I drive it at 2500 rpm on long trips the mpg drops to 15-16.

just got back from a 1,000 mile round trip averaged 22mpg with a 99 psd 4x4. kept speed around 65-68 and 2,000 rpm and under. go easy on the loud pedal it works........

My 6.0 Super duty gets 22/23 on the expressway if I keep it under 75mph. And 16/17 towing 24' enclosed.

Weird, I only get maybe 18 at best doing 75 with a nice tuner, bigger turbo, full exhaust, intake, new injectors, new heads, and 3.73 gears.

If its already studded and bulletproofed then Id go for it. that is where most of the cost is. Just take it for a long test drive and see if you can get a scanner to monitor EOT and ECT to see if you have a plugged cooler (super common on the 6.0)

If you dont mind spending extra maint money or working on diesel then go for it. the 6.0s are great when maintained and bulletproofed

I owned two of them, an 02 with the 7.3 and an 04 with the 6.0. I loved them both. I got high teens around town mixed driving with the 6.0. That was a 4x4 with a small lift and 35" tires on it. If I remember, the 7.3 was just a tad lower with a CAI, 33's, exhaust and tune. I towed a 24' enclosed all over and those trucks didn't even know it was back there.

I looked at a couple before I ended up buying my 2500HD crew cab, I wasn't ready to give up the bed space. Regarding fuel cost I looked at it as the same truck with a 6.0L gas would get about 12-13 mpg, hand calculating mileage I get about 18 mpg(truck tells me 21-22) with little to no highway driving. Easy math tells me I get an extra 100+ miles over 20 gallons of fuel. That more than offsets the added cost for diesel.

Regardless of maintenance cost everyone should own a big diesel truck.

If you plan on using it for what its designed for, absolutely get a diesel!....

If you pay to have service work and maint work done, the 6.0 will not be your friend. I cannot stress that fact enough here. (as a 6.0 owner)
