Any Chrysler techs in here? 08 Dodge avenger steering wheel shake problem.

I am trying to help a friend track down a steering wheel shake/shimmy issue with his 2008 Dodge avenger SXT 2.4L. (65k miles)

The steering wheel shake/shimmy starts at about 52 MPH and is accompanied by what feels like the whole car vibrating.

All wheels/tires are in good shape, but they are mismatched. This concerns me a little bit, but I don't think it is the problem, because I swapped the fronts with the backs, and the steering wheel shimmy/shake persists.

The front end is tight, and there are no wheel bearing noises while driving. The axles are not torn.

Any ideas/ suggestions?

Around here it doesn't take much to throw your tires off balance....first thing I'd do is have the wheel and tires balanced, and an alignment check/done.

Justin,

Its the NUT sitting behind the steering wheel......lol. Just rotate the floor mats or its low on horn fluid. Halfshaft ready to explode is common on those.

Here is my problem with the mis matched tires... they all have good tread, which is fine... he bought them all used, so im sure there is a reason someone else didn't want them... Im gonna have em thrown on a road force machine and see what we get. I really don't want to start throwing parts at it, so hopefully 3/4 or 4/4 tires have shifted belts and are fucked up, and replacing them fixes the problem.

I am more or less looking for someone who has knowledge of any common problems with this platform vehicle... other than the common problem of it being a Chrysler product.

Its the tires trust me! In my job we deal with this stuff everyday, chrysler cars are sensitive to tires, Even balanced tires can cause a shake like this. I normally tell a Tech to swap in wheels and tires from a like car for test. Good luck finding one your not at a dealer :-) I dont work in a shop anymore so Im not much help with test parts.
