Aluminum Heads

I have a pair of edel. performer heads on my 95 mustang and was wondering how hot can you run them? sometimes the needle will creep up to the "A" in normal .I used a temp gun and it reads 205 before the radiator at the thermostat housing in the intake when its at the "A".

put a real temp gauge on the car to start ...and try to keep the water temp under 200 ...180 would be even better ...but shooting the head with a heat gun aint gonna tell ya much ...you need to know coolant temp...

is it an efi motor? if so hook up a scanner to the OBD connector and read a real temp reading off the computer. If carb'd, like dave said hook up a autometer temp gauge

Yea its efi but i think its obd 1. i only have a scanner thats obd2. But will temps over 200 damage them?

200 wont hurt the heads ...but there is a preffered operating temp ..High temps are hard on the oil ...which in turn is hard on the engine ...200 wont hurt the heads per se ...think about combustion temps..200 isnt really anything ..but your engine is gonna love if you get the coolant temps down ...

My buddys 331 ran warm with AFR's on it. He called them and they said the decks were pretty thick on their heads so it shouldn't be a problem. Can't remember what temp it ran at, but it got pretty warm at times. Never had a problem though.

Edelbrock has a 5/8 deck on the head and they can take a decent amount of heat, due to them using a decent material as well as deck thickness. You can run that head at 210 all day (coolant temp) and even 240 in an extreem situation. So long as the bolts and gaskets will hold up. But put a real temp gauge in, the factory ones are more idiot lights than actual gauges.
