Advice for my first gun.

I plan to purchase my first handgun in a month or so and wanted some recommendations on what to check out. My uncle wanted me to look into a Sig Sauer P226. So far the only handguns I've personally shot are a Browning Hi-Power (9mm), S&W 1911 (.45), S&W 22A (.22LR) and a Glock (.40). Kind of liked the 9mm and .40 the best. I don't plan on getting a CCW for a year or two so I'm not looking for strictly a carry piece right now. Money isn't really an issue but cheaper is always better as long as its a solid gun. Might even go used for my first gun if I can a good deal.

Thanks everyone

In regards to the "specific" gun, i'd suggest going to the range and find out what feels best in your hand. 9mm ammo is a lot cheaper than 40 and very similar power so it's what i'd personally suggest.

Any specific models that you recommend for someone to check out? They have a ton of guns at the place near my house and I don't want to spends a lot of their time holding all of them. If I had 5 or 6 recommendations I could just go there and look at those to start with.

Rent and shoot them all.

Are you dead set on any specific caliber? That narrows it down quite a bit. Then you just decide if you want a full-size, compact, or sub-compact. If you're not going to carry it, I would suggest getting a full-size or compact.

I'd get a Buckmark .22 since ammo is so damn expensive right now.

The Browning HP is the old benchmark in 9mm although somewhat dated. They point well and are dead reliable.
As far as other full size steel guns I would look at the CZ 75B, the Beretta 92, Smith and Wesson 5926, and the SIG P226 your uncle suggested.
This would be a terrific cross section of the 9mm steel framed guns and all are high quality weapons.
Personally I think the Beretta and CZ are much sexier designs than the others.
I have not heard good things about the Smith 1911's. I would go Springfield for a mid range priced 1911.
I'll let the younger guys opine on the polymer framed stuff as I have no real world experience to share.
All of this assumes concealed carry is a secondary consideration at this point although MANY people comfortably carry full size guns every day.

I have a glock 23, longer barrel, shorter grip. good for carry, but not too small that it gets lost.

Sig 226R was my first gun ever. That thing is my baby. It's a full sized gun, so I wouldn't suggest it for CCW, but I love it all around.

If you have small hands, go to the store and hold it, rent one if you can. I love all my Sigs and wouldn't sell any of them.

I'd also suggest looking at a Sig 228/229 also. Pretty much the same gun as the 226, just a smaller frame. I use a 239 9mm for CCW year round.

i loved my glock 30 (.45)... it was small enough to conceal easily and held 10+1... it was also very accurate and easy to fire

i say get a benelli m2 or m4 <3 it's perfect for zombie devistation and you never have to worry about the double tap ;) ... check out glock's and springfield xd's(i have a xd 45 compact and a glock 26 love them both) .. i also have a s&w m&p 9mm i have lots of ftf and fte problems with it(not what you wanna pull on a crack head) 1911s are cool to look at not to carry unless you're 6'10" 350# also think about a revolver.. they are simple and never jam. the s&w airlite's are awesome guns imop

I'm a big ran of wheel guns myself. Ruger has a real nice LCR .38 special. Ammo is cheap, revolvers are very reliable, and fun to shoot. I have a couple of them. I like the M9, Px4, and all glocks. I have a 357 MAG that I Conceal Carry and I love that as well. I also carry a PARA 1911 .45 which is also a fun gun to shoot but as they said, it's pretty expensive.

My first was a SIg P229 in 40 cal, and i still have that gun, sweet gun, shoots great. I f you are on a budget, i would look into a used Sig 228 or 226 in 9mm, and you'll be very happy. Try for the 228, as they are a beautiful gun, i will never sell mine.
