Accessing web through cellphone

I got a new phone (Motorola Atrix 4G) and this thing is kickass. I got the optional Entertainment/Web Connect kit and accessing the internet is just dropping the phone into the dock. The thing is, I can use my cable box as a wireless portal and I don't get charged minutes on my phone since this thing is a computer. :badass:

yea. the only provider who offers Voice over WiFi (UMA) is Tmobile.

In the US I should say. Rogers offers it in soviet canuckistan.

False. Verizon and AT&T both have units that connect to your cable modem and then receive a 3G signal from your cellphone & push the call out over your internet connection.

Which is next to useless because you have to have the box. With Tmobile you can use your phone basically anywhere you get a wifi signal, it's built right into the phone. It's pretty cool.

Since when? ATT and Verizon phones have the capability, but the carriers do not allow it. Nothing on AT&T or Verizon's site talks about allowing calls over wifi.

Ok. mark is talking about something else. I'm talking about Voice over WiFi. Where if you have a WiFi signal, you don't use your minutes, but instead use the Wireless network. it's the same reason that AT&T has the In Home Microcell. If they allowed VOWiFi they wouldn't have a need for the microcell in homes.

Exactly. The guys from our Virginia office have TMobile BB Bold and they can make calls in our plant (where there's no cell signal), but anyone from our location has a Verizon Bold and they can't.

They always ask "UMA should let you make the call we have the same phone". Sure AT&T and Verizon will sell you that access point but the point is a TMobile phone will just work, no extras required.

I gotcha. Yeah, native voice over IP would be awesome. The only reason more phones don't have that capability is the cell companies don't want to lose out on revenue.

The calls still count against your minutes unless you have @Home plan or whatever.
