a few ?'s about my C4 trans

Instigator

POHO's finest Redneck!
i just did a rebuild and Brand new converter on/in it and it shifts solid but when i manually shift it from 1-2 and 2-3 it carries out until i step on it or hit the gas then it shifts, it shifts with out any problems when i run it hard but regular driving is the problem thats when it wants to carrie out the RPMs and dont shift until i hit it then it shifts, i cleaned the Governor and still no help, could this be a vacuum problem ? i ask because i changed the intake when the trans was out and had to run the vacuum line to the carb instead of the intake witch may not be giving me enough vacuum at normal driving to shift it ? or could it be a problem in the Valve body (Fluid pressure) ? its a (Early) Stock rebuilt C4 w/ a shift kit and Edge converter, any thoughts on this ? Thanks Scott

Scott, your question is confusing. i read what your asking three times, and still have difficulty understanding what your asking.
#1-vacuum modulator line needs to be attached to the intake, switch it. also record intake vacuum with a gauge at the manifold.
early c-4. what year exactly was the v-body?
also you mentioned shift kit, its a transgo shift kit? whats the part# 47-2?

sorry if its confusing, dont know for sure on the year of the valve body all i know is it has a upgrade shift kit (B&M)in it and its a late 70s trans/valve body, it has 12 inch #s of vacuum, i changed the vac line to the intake and will give it a try in a bit to see if it helped and post back later, Thanks for the info

You didnt put it on the ported vacum for a dizzy did you ?

no, i had it on the carb

hope this helps on the confusion part
it shifts great when im to the floor and giving it hell
but when i drive it like a DD it dont want to shift until i hit the gas 1/2 pedal or so

ok 77 ford, what your saying is it shifts late under normal acceleration. several possible causes.
1-low vacuum. if you only have 12 inches at idle, chances are you will have 5-8 driving down the road. that would cause late up shifts. drive down the road and look at the guage and see what you have. several options to deal with low vacuum.
2-kick down linkage stuck or mis adjusted. kick down should see no pressure on lever till somewhere around 3/4 or higher throttle.
3-misassembled v body. did you install the B&M "trans pack" ? (the word shift kit is registered, and can only be used by transgo)
4-governor, loose bolts, misassembled, installed backwards( i think this would give you no upshift)
I think your problem is most likely vacuum. do you have a vacume pump? mityvac?
if so, disconnect your vacuum line on the intake and pump up 18 inches and drive it.
