i have a 94 f150 302 mass air idle hunts on cold starts esspecially from 600 to 1700 and then stalls but if i put it in gear it runs perfect its an auto help help no other issues tried a new mass air meter
 
Could be an issue with base idle adjustment. disconnect the IAV and set your base idle with the throttle plate screw. Also check for vacum leaks and fuel pressure.

good call. sometimes you can clean them and buy some time. also clean the throttle body and butterfly. there's a weep-hole in the plate, buy some carb cleaner and trying cleaning them both real good.
