93 Ford AOD help

Hello all,
It seems I have had an issue arise with my 93 thunderbirds AOD trans. It has a 5.0 H.O. The problem is when backing up then putting it in either OD or D the first gear wants to slip until it engages. Once engaged its fine, shifts fine and does not slip "currently". The problem is I have to rev it gently 1500-2000 before 1st gear fully locks in. Any Ideas? I've checked the trans fluid and its a little dirty but full; actually its a little above full. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, I want to sell this car but not if its having these sort of problems. The car has about 137,xxx on it and this problem happened like the flick of a light switch??? not one sign in sight of comming on I simply got off the expressway; stopped; and there the problem was??? I drove the car 2 more times since this happened and the issue has not changed nor got any worse. Many thanks in advance for any help in shedding some light on this issue.

Check to make sure the filter gasket is not torn or missing. Can cuase similar issues.

Thanks Sean,
I just replaced the filter gasket still doing the same thing. Checked the old fluid; no metalic, not much band material in it either???? Any other ideas... Also when 1st does finally engage it hits hard enough to chirp the tires.

Forward clutch pack comes on (when stopped) in od and d, then releases in 3rd and 4th, but has to reapply each time the vehicle comes out of 3rd or 4th and down shifts back in 2 or 1. Sounds like the fwd clutch pack is is either loosing pressure, from worn sealing rings, bad rubber seal, or just excessive clearance in the clutch pack.
The tv cable is still attached to the throttle body (bushing is not bad/missing) and you did not touch the adjustment did you?

Tv Cable is in tact attached to throttle lever and the bushing is in great shape; it was replaced about 2 years ago. I did not touch the adjustment after reading a previous post here that stated you should set a tv cable with a gauge. I also checked to see if possibly the cable broke/sticky so I pulled on the end from the adjuster it came out freely and returned with a moderate tension therefore I asume that the cable is fine. Thanks for your help; any chance you can PM me a price on benching the trans? Just a rebuild not a R/R I'll take care of that being I really need to save a buck(family man and all)

Thanks again

I doubt it's the sealing rings. Uusually this lead to clutch fialure from lack of pressure. This sounds more like a delayed apply. Most likely culprit is misadjusted Shifter linkage and or a valve body issue. Being that you just replaced the filter I would recheck the condition of the filter gasket and check for proper fill level. AOD's tend to be a bit finicky about fill level.
