i have a 2002 explorer sport with a 8.8 rear end. my bearings are all shot so me and one of my techs at work are going to redo the rearend. but i wanted to get new ring&pinion set and a new posi unit. the carrier i have now is posi but junk i wanted to get a good one but i crawled under the truck today and i have the stupid abs tone ring on the carrier i was hopping i had the tone rings on the axles but nope of coarse not. so my question is does anyone make a better posi unit then what comes stock with the dumb tone ring on the carrier?. thanks in advance

yes but i think the carrier is different im sure. thats kinda another question i had to if it was different i guess i was just assuming

The factory posi is not that bad for a dd. I'm not so sure I would switch.
Your next option is a true trac.
The updated axle seals for your year come with new wire retainers for the half shaft.
I'm not 100% certain the axles will retain properly, but they should.
If my memory serves me I installed one in another model ford with a independent 8.8 with no problems.

i guess i can keep it it works good as long as im going straight but if im on a turn at all only the outside turn spins and it feels weird too like they both should be spinning and it vibrates idk. i work at a ford dealer ship you think they would know this stuff but they dont.

^^^ The reason only the outer tires spins while turning and the inner one doesn't is because the wheel speed differentiates even on a slight curve while driving. The inner tire has no choice but to slow down, otherwise the car would try and push itself to the highside during a turn just like if you installed a spool. ALL type of posi unit, even tru track and Detroit Locker will release power from the inner tire during a turn/curve. It's to prevent the cars rear end from being pushed high through a turn and spinning the car around. The vibration is more then likely a different issue. Hope that helped.

I would just rebuild it and get new clutch pack kit and set it up tight and you will be happy. I don't recall the trick of adding more friction and steels because my buddy AL always did that part but the posi will be a whole different beast once you do that.

thats what were gonna do my heavy mechanic showed me what was involved in a carrier and he said it vibrates prolly cuz the clutches are bad so were gonna get new clutches and throw a shim on each side to make it a little tighter which will be like a stock early 2000 ish mustang i believe. thanks for the input guys
