5pt harness guys

ok so i know it says 5 pt's are not street legal and just for offroad use but who still uses their factory belts instead of the 5 pts when on the street. i just got a set for my car but i think its going to look tacky if i have both in there.. opinions

I only had 5-pts in my SCCA Suzuki. I got pulled over for speeding twice (Sterling Heights and MSP) and the belts weren't even mentioned.

I went through a seat belt check point once with them on. They looked at me funny but didn't say a word

i figure they wont ever say anything since they are supposed to be safer but some might have a problem with it if they are in one of their moods

I took the front belts out of my car when I put my RJS cam locks in. I throw the shoulder belts on sometimes, but I'm not a big seatbelt person

I got a harness in mine and never had any problems when i been pulled over.

In both mine and my dad's cars we took the factory seatbelts out when the 5-pts went in. Never been pulled over with them, but neither of us loses any sleep over it either. Cam locks are the way to go for a true street car though IMO.

yeah i was going to get cam locks but im used to the regular style latch belts already so they were cheaper and it works out just fine for me

I have both in my stuff. Never thought about taking the stockers out really. With a dark interior I don't really think you would notice the oem belts. Much easier to use them day to day.

I always ran cam locks for the driver's side and regular for the passenger. I wanted to be able to get in and out of my car quickly but I didn't care much about the passenger.

Depends on the car, do you have a cage or at least a loop behind your head?

Wearing a 5 point with out a cage is very dangerous, if you roll and the roof collapses you won't slide down the seat like you would with a factory set up causing your head to be crushed. Now of course if you have a cage you should drive without a helmet.

If your car is prone to the roof collapsing if landing upside down than I wouldn't wear one.

i only have a 5pt in my car but i never use the bottom belt except for the few times going down the track... ive only been pulled over once in it and the belt wasnt mentioned, only the exhaust

This is very true. I saw a Neon roll at a club event at Waterford (Solo II). The car didn't have a roll bar or cage, and the helmet the driver wore was split in half. I assumed that the roll bar was in if he was asking about harnesses.

Ditto. My car had a 8-point at the time and my dad has a 4-point. I wouldn't have run harnesses without a roll bar. At the bare minimum maybe a harness bar so at least the belts won't compress your spine from anchoring them too low, but Ken brings up a good point about sliding down in the seat. Good food for thought. On the street we usually just wear the lap belts.

Never buy 2 of them....because the first set will be outdated in 2 years...that's the one that should go over to the pass. side seat...haha

You will want to keep your factory belt in because you didn't get camlocks...even a camlock setup is a hassle until you get used to it.

What can an officer say about them? Especially if they are not expired?
I've been pulled over a number of times and nothing was ever mentioned about them. I say screw it and use them. I prefer them over factory belts anyway...

That really depends on which sanctioning body you race with. Most tracks allow 4 or 5 years, except for SCCA...The funny thing is you can keep the original 40 year old Mustang belts in the car and use them, but if you have a 4 year old racing belt, you can't race....
